  1. im very new to the whole dvd-ripping scene. i need to do a project for school about the good science and bad science in science fiction movies. as part of the project i was planning on making a dvd with clips from all of the different movies exhibiting good science and bad science. so i went out and bought a Sony DRU-530A DVD burner. then i needed to rip the dvds to the various movies onto my hard drive so that i could start cutting clips from them. i read some tutorials on dvd ripping that i found on this site. the first dvd i tried was 2001: A Space Odyssey. all the VOB files ripped to the hard drive just fine, but when i go to play them in windows media player or realone, theres this little boxy logo that looks like the side of a rubik's cube that erratically bounces around the screen through the duration of the film. i figure its some security feature, but i cant have that thing appear in each one of my clips in the project. i was wondering if this is something thats actually embedded in the VOB file. can i remove it some how? will it still be there if i convert all my files to mpeg? all help will be greatly appreciated!

It is not embedded in the vob. You have a demo version of a Monlight-Elecard MPEG2 Codec installed. Just uninstall Monlight-Elecard MPEG2 Codec and get an another mpeg2 codec or buy it.

After uninstalling you'll need an mpeg2 codec. Install DVD playing software and you'll have it.

you got a dvd drive, right? most likely it came with dvd playing software. install it and there you have your mpeg2 codec.

LOL, Jeez that brings back memories. Man I thought Im raw now, but looking back at it, i was really raw. I thought it was because I was playing an svcd in media plaer without the right codec.
