ive done a few dvd movies off of xvid files, and so far, they have turned out ok...sounds perfect...video is pretty good (jerks slightly here and there but otherwise fine) been using the virtualdub, tmpgenc, tmpgenc dvd author method to make dvd's.....

now i want to start making dvd's of anime movies....i did my first one this morning which was an xvid and played perfect on media player...when i made a dvd out of it, it appears blocky on occasional scenes in the movie on the tv screen, any way to prevent this?

    possibly up your bitrate ?

What bitrate(s) have you used and what control method ? (CBR, VBR 2-pass, CQ)
    If in doubt, Google it.

    constant bitrate
    5640

i think thats the one u were after (still new to it all) rest of vid plays fine its just fast action scenes go a bit blocky (very noticable tho)

Use the same bitrate but lower the resolution to 352x480. That should decrease blockiness significantly.

do i lower the res in tmpgenc? the picture sort of "melts" into a jumbled mess then goes blocky, and goes perfect again on the next frame.

anyone else ever had this? works fine on the pc tho

  8. Change your motion search precision, to high quality, or highest quality. This will increase your encode time but should help with blockiness in high motion scenes. You can find it in the settings-video tab. You should be able to leave the resolution as full D1 if the xvid is of high enough quality and resolution. The bitrate you are using should be ok.
There is not a lot of difference in quality between high and highest, but highest takes a lot longer to encode, so I generally use high.

Those are macro blocks... indicative of not enough bitrate.

Like Craig said, try using High Quality Motion Search Precision. It allows you to squeeze more out of a given bitrate.

VBR is also a way to squeeze more quality out of low bitrates.

If you're doing the capture yourself, try capturing at 704xNNN instead of 720xNNN (that 2.5% less information may be just enough...).
