m2v and mpa files conversion to vob files

I have tried ifoedit but I keep getting an error, "Could not open for writing". Is there any other program I could try or can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Yes, I enter the m2v and mpa files in the Audio and Video under the menu DVD Author/Author New DVD, enter the destination folder and then it freezes and says "Could not open for writing". Can me runníng Win98SE have anything to do with it? I have converted a 1.7 GB avi file with Cuesoft AVI to VCD DVD SVCD 4.02 .

That's a different story! But something's still out of whack. IfoEdit can't write to the dir you tell it to. What if you simply select "C:" as destination dir?

I will have to try a larger partition on the HD. C is pretty full, so perhaps the partition is the problem. It is not that Win98 cannot deal with large files?
If this does not work can I use TMPGEnc DVD Author or does this only work with mpg files? My conversion has left me with m2v, mpa and mpg files.

W98/FAt32 can do 4 GB, and if you're not trying to create an ISO image, that'd do, as VOBs are split at 1 GB. I'm not really certain on TDAs capabilities, but I'd be surprised if it didn't take elementary streams too.

Upon importing the m2v or the mpg file into TMPGEnc DVD Author the conversion proceeds in ca 20 minutes but the audio is out of sync. Any suggestions?

There can be gazillions of causes for loss of sync. What is your source material, and how did you go from there to a m2v and a mpa file?

See above. It was an avi file that was converted with Cuesoft AVI to SVCD DVD.

I'll get back to you about the codec, frame rate etc.
The programme is called Cuesoft AVI To VCD DVD SVCD (http://www.avi-vcd.com/), but I am converting from avi to DVD.

The original avi file was a DivX 4, a bitrate of 1659 kb/s and 25.00 fps. The audio part was 192 kb/s (96/ch, stereo) MPEG-1 Layer 3, CBR, 48 kHz. All according to Gspot. The mpa file has MPEG-1 Layer 2, 224 kbps. The m2v and mpg files could not be read by Gspot. I am doing a PAL DVD.

The source specs seems fine, and, if error free, could be fed to i.e. TMPGEnc for immediate encoding to DVD spec mpg. Now, If I was you, I'd start reading some of the AVI to DVD guides under Convert, and put the CuCuSoft app to rest for a while. There's obviously something with the AVI that it doesn't like. Have you scanned the AVI for bad frames? (That's a "first thing to do" if you can't be 100% sure the AVI is in perfect condition, before doing anything else.)

BY the way, the avi file that I was working with was originally 2 avi files which I joined to one avi file. Would it be better to treat each original avi seperately? Can I join them somewhere down the line or do I encode that both individually to mpg and then to vob files and then use dvd2one to convert everything to one disc?

Yes, That's the "standard" way of doing things. If you still get problems, it's easier to pin point than guess at what's going on behind the scenes in the Cucusoft application.

Shouldn't matter, but every step not taken in the process eliminates a potential problem. You can encode to 2 mpg's / m2v/mpa pairs, and make them (author them) as parts of the same title.
