Seems like a no-brainer for anyone looking to do video production. Are there any problems or drawbacks? Is the DVDR format stable enough, or some something better coming along?

  2. Biggest downsides at the moment are probably cost of the drive and media. Given the fact that there will most likely be drives that will be realeased in the near future that will cost significantly less and do more (ie. more fetures) and do them quicker.

Just take a look at the evolutionary progress of the (now common) CD-R and CD-RW drives.

    Has anything been announced?

Since the drive is now available for $460, I worry less about getting "screwed" by a unit with similar features for 30% less coming out a month later. When this drive sold for $700+ I wouldn't touch it. Can't afford that kind of depreciation.

I would wait a while....dvd+rw seems very promising and the writers "only" costs $500...but no cheap dvd+r discs yet...

  5. I love mine... It all depends on when you want to get on the bandwagon. In my mind I am that much further ahead on the learning curve with every DVD that I burn. I liken waiting for the next one/the better one to holding off on buying a computer... Holding out because a faster one is going to come out in a month will only make you continue holding out because faster ones are going to continually come out.

The big downside for me is that I am now building a dual processor computer to handle encoding faster... If it isn't one thing its another
