Can I somehow cut the end of an AVI file without having to rewrite the file?

I have an AVI file of about 18 GB and I want to cut out the last ~3 GB, but since I only have about 2 GB free HD, I can't write the partial file to a new file. I want to just 'shorten' the very same file.
    Can this be solved?

    OPen yourfile.avi in VirtualDub

Under both audio and video, select direct stream copy

Select both your in and out points of the area you wish to delete in the timeline, hit your delete key or go to edit, delete frames

go to file, savi avi, save it as yourfile2.avi

No, unless you have enough RAM to set up a 15 GB ram disc...

  4. What do you want to do after you've edited? I'ts an awfully big file to keep!

You can't edit in situe - you have to write out another (edited) file. The only thing I can suggest is to use VirtualDub as spidey suggests but don't Direct Stream copy. Perform some sort of compression (Divx/Xvid on the video and MP3 on the audio). You should get a decent copy of your edited original that way and be within your 2GB max
