  1. tried about every option in TMPGenc, still the vido looks "blocky" - that is, the mpg lookes like a checkerboard.

    the avi is fine

(using NERO, i compare the avi to the mpeg in FULL SCREEN)

    anys solutions?

With all of the details that you have provided (none) it is very difficult to guess what is causing your problem. Generally, in an avi to mpeg conversion, blockiness can be caused by two things:

    1. Upsizing the resolution from lower to higher. It's best to convert to a similar or slightly lower resolution as the source.

    2. The bitrate is too low for the resolution, i.e. your bits per pixel count is too low. You can drop the resolution or increase the bitrate to compensate. Also, if file size is a restriction, using 2-pass VBR in order to better distribute the bits can help.

this sounds like a bitrate problem. try a higher bitrate.

Since you are converting captured material, which tends to be noisy (esp when compared to DVD), I suggest that you use some noise filtering. There is noise that you cannot even see and it eats up bitrate. Either filter and frameserve from Vdub or use the internal TMPGEnc noise filter. TMPGEnc's filter will take some time but I hear it's worth it. 8)
