Today I tried to burn an SVCD again... my Pioneer DV - 444 works great with VCD, but poor quality. In SVCD with the following:
MPEG-2 480x480 23.976fps CBR 2000kbps, Layer-2 44100Hz 192kbps I am using TMPG to convert.
I have a very small picture on the screen (doesn't take whole screen) and the audio is about 15 seconds behind the video... kinda annoying. I have tried everything I can think of. I have read your FAQ's etc... I am making many coasters... I really need your help please.
Have a good Turkey day!

ShiZZZoN-
Ok do this-
1-reason why video is so small is cuz its 480 x 480, change it to 352 x 240. If size is too odd that way, go into advanced tab and double click clip frame. click middle button in there and choose center(custom size) and manually adjust your size.
Next- your audio out of sync, encode using 29.97 fps no matter what your source fps is -
I was able to d/l a SVCD from labdv.com... the NTSC format worked great but the PAL did not. I know my player can support XSVCD and VCD so I am simply not encoding correctly... Please help!

pioneer plays @ 352 x 480 quite well. on my pioneer dv-525 480 x 480 is ok. so you can try odd (s)vcd specs as mpeg2 decoders in pioneer line are great but dont always form to 480 x 720 to fit screen on 4 x 3 tv

Sean Madison that is really not very good advice. The only reason to ever lower your resolution below the standard of 480x480 is if you feel you don't have enough bitrate to support it. Resolution vs bitrate can always be debated but 2mbits per/sec should be plenty to support 480x480. If you are getting resizing/display problems the absolute last thing you want to do is switch to a non-compliant resolution. Chakotay2, what version of TMPGenc are you using? Some earlier versions had a bug which could cause the picture to not fill the screen. Make sure in the advanced tab that your source aspect ratio is correct. Get the info from dvd2avi.
In regards to audio and sync, you should NEVER ignore your source fps and encode in 29.97. Not only will that greatly decrease your quality in almost all cases, but it is bound to give you motion problems eventually. The settings you use to encode are completely dependant on the nature of your source, including its fps.
Chakotay2, what source are you using? If its dvd are you sure you used force film correctly? When you encoded in 23.976 did you remember to set the 3:2 pulldown flag?
Never, I repeat never just take your TMPGenc encoded file and burn it. I guarantee that this will cause sync problems on alot of dvd players. At the very least demux and then remux in TMPGenc, but you should really use bbmpeg to remux. This will fix most sync problems if your encoding method is correct.

Chakotay2,
I read in one of your earlier posts that you D/L a sample clip to test your
problem out. I have some sample clips that I encoded with TMPG and
if you like, you can D/L them and try them out on your dvd player to see
if you still have problems. You can go get them Here
Let me know what you think of them and also if they play on your player
or know. I use Nero to burn to SVCD (i turn off compliance). The clips
are not 480x480. They are 352x480 but the quality are very good.
I've ben receiving e-mail from other people on other sites contacting me
telling me that my clips are awsome. Don't get me wrong, I like hearing
that and boosts my confidence in my work, but although I didn't give out
my e-mail address (I know I didn't) these people seem to know how to
get it. I guess it's no harm, but still, it amazes me what people will do to
get what they wantIt's now biggie. Just thought I'd share that. Anyways,
I hope you figure out your solution to your problem.
Oh, and just for the record, I don't MUX my audio (clips) what-so-ever, for
any of my caps from satalete or vhs. Capture cards I use is the DC10 and
my old hauppauge wintv pci. I also cap with my PVR usb model. When I
cap with the PVR, I MUST (as adam said) MUX my audio, else Nero wont
burn propertly (wont play on my apex dvd player) But I fould a way around
that, ...since I already use Womble to cut my commercials out, and save
each clip as a file each, I don't have to MUX my audio (clips)
I just cut/save/drag/burn then play!
good night. -
Now that I am using the template of NTSC and not the NTSC film template it is working alot better. As for muxing and demuxing...I don't have a clue what that is... I was just following the information on the convert how to on this web page... it doesn't mention to do that or how... I still don't know what I am doing but by switching from NTSC (non film) it seems to be okay in 480x480... Will burn a few more and see if it was just a fluke it worked.

Also, it was asked what version of TMPG I was using...I use 2.01.30.116.
I will check the source aspect ratio and try again... I have the sound issue worked out by changing templates.
Thanks!
