I need help in buying the best capturing device for my laptop. reason i say so is cause i just bought this monster laptop and i also just got an external DVD writer. now i have about a billion hours worth of The Simpsons episodes and i wannna convert them to DVD. WHat the best capture device for a laptop with Firewire and USB 2.0 ports? this laptop is new to the market so newer equipment is the best way to go. Any help?

  2. while you're waiting on more replies, good time to search for such over in the capture cards (see l/h side of page). you can search for usb, firewire or pcmcia types.. and probably find related user comments.

    Enjoy that new rig !

You might look into the ADVC-100. A little expensive, but it will work with most any firewire port and you can use it with other computers in the future. I have tried it with my laptop and it works great.

  4. I use the Hauppauge WINTV PVR USB2.0 with my Dell Latitude.
I get very good results. I added a USB 2.0 dual port PCMCIA card.
The Hauppauge uses hardware encoding and produces DVD compliant mpeg files.

Hauppauge makes great products, great software (namely, total control over your capture settings as opposed to other manufacturers), and seem to give a lot of priority to support.

I just got the PVR-250 (PCI) after getting 4 different cards and comparing them. Couldn't be happier.
