    Sorry another newbie question,
    I now want to buy a firewire card and cable, I see I can get both from ebay for around $16, should I be paying more or are they all pretty infallible? I don't want to shell out $70 when the cheaper ones work just as well.

    As long as it is OHCI compliant, it doesn't matter. You'll usually find the more expensive ones come bundled with video editing software and a pretty box.
