what are the advantages of this port.

  4. The advantages are that this connection is designed for video. Therefore it doesn't waste any of its bandwidth on security and networking protocols like USB does. Even though its specs show USB2 is faster, with the "no wasted bandwidth" its actually passes more data than USB2....

What are you trying to do?

Firewire is wonderful for DV video transfer but really sucks as a printer interface.

  6. Are you talking about FireWire on a computer, or FireWire on a DVD recorder?

On a computer (Windows or Mac), FireWire is usually the best digital video interface and can offer high performance with some scanners and other hardware. Depending on the computer it also allows one or two tricks with external hard drives that are not always possible with USB2.

On a standalone DVD recorder, FireWire is less useful from a technical standpoint. It makes it convenient to transfer video camera footage to DVD, but quite a few DVD recorders don't do a "pure" digital conversion from DV to MPEG2, instead they convert the FireWire input to analog and then re-encode that to MPEG2. In some cases you will get better quality by letting your CAMERA convert the DV stream to analog first, and using the DVD recorders analog inputs. It pays to do some testing.

Normal for desktop (4pin to 6pin)

Laptops often use 4pin to 4pin.

On a camera they look like this. The middle one is mini-FireWire and the lower mini-USB:

    This from a Canon camcorder.
