  1. Hi all,

I need some help with audio in an mpg movie file. The audio in this particular clip is a couple seconds behind the video resulting in a very weird and mismatched audio and video. (Note: I get this only for the second half of the movie about 15 min, the 15 min first half of the movie video and audio are in synch)

I'm using MainConcept to extract just the audio in mpa file and put it in TMPGEnc program with video of the original clip and try to re-encode by using the project wizard in TMPGEnc. But the result after re-encode doesn't help at all, video and audio still don't match. By the way, already tried the Source Range in TMPGEnc to correct the video audio gap, but it doesn't do anything.

What should I do? What programs out there is good for matching audio and video (that's probably good for karaoke video matching frame by frame with the sound and the words captions to sing along)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  2. Meocat:
This problem has been extensively covered in these forums. Go to advanced search, search on synch* in the subject line and you will get many variations on the theme. You will need an audio editor and a video editor, I recommend Goldwave for the audio and VirtualDub or Womble for the video (just my preferences). Here is how I would do it (caveat: I'm no expert):

Cut your clip into two portions (good audio, bad audio) (TMPGEnc)
    De-mux the bad clip (TMPGEnc)
Load demuxed audio in Goldwave. Load Video in an editor (e.g. VirtualDub or Womble)
    Determine the gap between audio/video
insert silence or delete as determined above
    Remux, rejoin your clip

This method only works if the audio is off by a constant amount, but if thats the case its really pretty easy. The key is to use the video editor to visually note a point where a sound begins (such as lips making a consonant) and compare with the point in the audio where the waveform for that sound begins. Using the timelines in the editors you can get a very accurate measurement of the gap.

Good luck, and keep in mind sometimes the best option is to just re-capture the source!

Another way to fix the problem is demux the video and audio and load the audio into a sound editor such as goldwave and located the spot where the audio goes out of sync and either clip out the portion you need or add a portion from the previous few seconds of audio and save and feed it thru besweet to make it into mp2 and remux with the m2v clip that you have from the the demuxing. For audio that gradually goes out of sync you will have to stretch or shrink the audio timeline.

  4. Hi guys,

Actually my audio is gradually out of sync (for like the last half 15 min of the clip) and runs behind the video. So how do you stretch or shrink the audio timeline? What program to do this?

In my case, audio is behind the video, so is it shrinking the audio?

Step by step or a link to show how to do this would be a lot of help.

You guys mentioned about VirtualDub, what about VirtualDubMod? Is this the latest or better version of VirtualDub i.e. has more functions to it?

(Side note: the clip that I have started out as a .DAT file, I then converted to mpg file using TMPGEnc. So any insights to fix it from .DAT file extension without even converting to mpg file is also cool)

Thank you guys . I really appreciate reading my post and help me out like this.

Use goldwave and effects/timewarp to reduce or increase the time length. If the audio is behind the video then you have to stretch the audio so it catches up.On dat files all you need to do is run it thru vcd easy to remove the header without any encoding to make it mpg.
