DVD+R is the default booktype setting and AFAIK it cannot be changed.

Can you just use a DVD-R and have it do about the same thing? (sorry, still a bit new and confused)
I am no media whore and have no preference to + or - yet -
Not really. If you have a DVD player that refuse to play anything other than DVD Forum approved format (ie, DVD-R), then you can get away without bitsetting by using DVD-R.
But there are some DVD players (mostly old ones) that refuse to play either DVD-R or DVD+-R, but have no problem playing DVD+R with a DVD-ROM booktype. -
do you think they will come out with a dvd-rom bitsetting hack for the a0-6 ...like they did for the nec1300a and lite-on 811?

Ok, that's what I was looking for. I didn't mean set a booktype on a DVD-R, I meant that is dvd+r + booktype pretty much = to a DVD-r..

My guess is that there is some legal baggage involved with the licensing of the DVD-R portions of a multiformat burner that disallow the use of bitsetting for the + portions. So, in essence, you probably won't ever see bitsetting on multi-format drives, only pure + drives.

Here is an official bitsetter for the multiformat LiteOn 411, 811,....Originally Posted by Cornucopia

Again, not entirely true. There are some DVD players will not play either DVD+R or DVD-R, but will play DVD+R that has a DVD-ROM booktype.Originally Posted by Shudder
There is no 'legal baggage' involved. Manufacturers are free to add bitsetting to their drives. Most don't since you can use DVD-R if DVD+R doesn't work for you.Originally Posted by Cornucopia
There are quite a few dual format drives that support bitsetting now: NEC1300, BTC, Nu Tech and the Liteon. The BTC and Nu Tech will even support bitsetting to DVD-
