I bought LOTR: The Two Towers Special Extended DVD Edition (wide-screen). It plays fine on the DVD player and on my father's WinXP Home notebook. On my Win2K Pro system using the InterActual software from the DVD, the audio and the video are jumpy, and there are pops in the audio. Using Intervideo WinDVD and MS Windows Media Player, the video appears to be fine, but there's no audio at all. Someone please tell me why and what I can do about it.
Thanks.

you give no specs about your win2k system so its a crap shoot as to what the problem may be .....
posting your phone /fax and email address on a forum ..... now that IS unussual ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I'm desperate for an answer as soon as I can get one. One thing I forgot to mention is that when I view the Fellowship Of The Ring Extended DVD, it plays fine. Don't know what specs I should have included, but here's what Eudora reports (minus the registration number line):
Platform: Windows 2000
Machine Type: Intel
System Version: 5.00.2195
Processor: Pentium II or III Model 2816, Stepping 1
Physical RAM Installed: 523760 Kb
Eudora: Version 6.0.0.22
Mode: Paid Mode
MSHTML Version: 6.00
WININET Version: 6.00 -
specs =
1. cpu speed and type
2. video card exact model
3. memory (amount and type)
4. hard drive(s) specs and size
5. motherboard (if known)
6. sound card exact model
but an off the wall guess - your system is not powerfull enough to play back dvd's and/or you do not have a hardware mpeg2 decoder in your video card and/or system configuration"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Like I said before, I view the Fellowship Of The Ring Extended DVD, and others, with no problem. The system certainly is powerful enough to view DVDs.
This info was provided by Belarc Advisor. It was easier than trying to remember how to spell some of the brand names. Also, Win2K is patched fully up to date.

the geforce2mx has a decoder chip - ok

try installing this codec https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=186#comments (ac3 ds filter) for the no audio in mediaplayer
i assume its not a frag problem because your video plays fine with one player ...
i suggest to not use windows media player but powerdvd or windvd or clasic media player or zoom or core media player ...

I took note of your MPEG-2 suggestion. I ran GSpot to make sure it was there, but it wasn't. It seems that after I my system went ca-ca a couple of months ago, forcing me to freshly install Win2K, I forgot to re-install the MPEG-2 codec. I just did it. The problem has been resolved. I've been in computers for 22 years as programmer, network admin, systems integrator and consultant. I can't believe that I missed something like this. It takes me back to the old days when I had to teach myself to not go looking for the obscure by overlooking the obvious. Apparently, I forgot the lesson.
Thanks for your help.
