I was about to try Virtual Dub as it seems quite popular but when I click on Capture AVI the following message pops up:

    No Capture Driver available.

I am using Canopus EZDV card. I think this might be the cause as WMM doesnt detect any Video capture device either. The guy at canpous said this was due to it not using the Microsoft codec.

If I got a normal firewire card would this work?

The EZDV card came bundled with the ADVC-100 but its been a pain in the arse really, it took me ages to figure out you need to click cap as Ref AVI or it stops at 9 mins.

No wonder they gave it away!

Virtualdub won't 'capture' DV, but you can use DVIO or my favorite, WinDV to transfer to your HD in DV2 format and then Virtualdub will recognize the file and you can edit, filter, frameserve and do all the things that Virtualdub does well. You will need to install a DV codec to do this. They're in the 'Tools' section to the left. There is also a version of Virtualdub that will accept MPG format. I have also heard that EZDV uses DV1 format that is not compatible with some programs. DV2 works better for me.
EDIT: Get a regular firwire card, use one of the two programs I mentioned above (Or Scenalyzer, etc., in DV2 format.) EZDV cards seem to have problems.

Took me a few goes to figure the ref AVI file bit out, but after actually reading the manual (6 months later of course!) it does actually tell you that in there.

Also I can't capture with VDub - get the 'no capture device' message - if I try on a second comp with normal firewire connection. DVIO and AVApp work fine though.
Life is what happens just when you've got everything planned.

Thanks for ya advice! I will try a normal firewire card and the programs you mentioned.

I did download DVIO, strange tho, it was only 36 Kb and when I ran it from the desktop it started ok. I clicked capture from camera (or ADVC100 in my case, via the dreaded ezdv!) and it always gives an error message and asks if I want to send it to Microsoft.
