Newbie Alert.
I recently built a machine with an NEC ND1300A DVD writer which I had to update the firmware to work with orange bulkpaq DVDs
I backed up a DVD using DVD shrink and then burned the files using NERO6.
The DVD plays back no problem when inserted but if I start hitting the fast forward button I will get an error saying the disc may be damaged or need cleaned. The disc is certainly clean and undamaged.
Can someone give me any advice or has anyone seen this problem?
Thanks

use DVDINFO and check it for errors. You may be appalled at the number of errors from your cheap bulk disks.
To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Gazorgan is spot on. Cheapo DVD's = cheapo playback quality. Hence, you should expect issues.
Try a quality media and see if u have the same problem. If u don't, you'll know why. -

are you getting this message on a PC or standalone? just curious. opps, sorry...just read your topic title againnever mind.

Gazorgan - I downloaded dvdinfo and ran it against said DVD, at around 75% scan it was showing LBA errors, (whatever that means).
My problem is that I bought a pack of 25 Bulkpaq orange 4x DVD-R. Initially they were giving an illegal disc error until I upgraded the firmware on my Freecom classic (Internal NEC ND1300A) DVD.
I have not tried it on a standalone and have not tried watching the whole movie so who knows it may crash at 75% of watching.
The issue occurs if I try to grab the progress bar and move forward.
So to my next point, would these discs be suitable for data and also what can you recommend as a 'Good Quality' but 'Affordable' Disc?
Thanks to everyone who responded. -
m8, it all depends.. I use Orange Bulkpaq and have had no problems what so ever.
I have an NEC1300 running herries 1.08 firmware.
My discs play ok on pc and standalone, even after a few months.. We will see as time goes on as to the integrity of the data. If they degrade and stop working then I will look to redoing them as it is not a problem as they are only backups of what I already have.

Zenith52 - Thanks - I think I'm on firmware 1.07. I will give it a check and possibly use 1.08. Any particular source to obtain 1.08?
I'll then try burning again.
It's a real pain when you know you are doing things right and you still have problems, you should be able to pick up any old discs and they should work -
Further to my problem. My actual drive is a Freecom Classic but has NEC ND1300A innards. So I went to the Freecom site and got the latest drivers for this drive. Version 1.31. I'm not sure how that relates to the NEC driver versions.
I have found that I can play DVD using Media Player and Real Player software and can use the scroll bar to move back and forward in time through the DVD. No errors.
The disc damaged error only appear to be from Power DVD v4.0. I've installed the latest patch from their site but this makes no difference. -

what is the purpose of the driver you downloaded from the vendor's websiteyour burner needs no driver. driver (whatever purpose it may have) is not the same as firmware. here is the site for v1.08 as provided by NEC (not hacked...yet
). http://herrie.rpc1.org/
also you have a very old version of powerdvd. try version 5. as far as the error message from dvdinfo...don't know. play the movie all the way thru and post the result. also what is the media id for the Orange Bulkpaq? thanks. -
I had that problem quite a few times. Just about every time the disk would play fine in my standalone. And every disk that gave me that problem had read errors when I checked them with DVDInfoPro.
The only disks I use now are Ritek and TDK- I haven't any any problem since I quit using the cheaper disks. -
Hi
I believe that the problem is Nero6. I myself burned one home movie authored with TMPG DVD Author in a couple of dvd-rw ( TDK, Maxell, Princo, JVC, etc ).
Everytime I used Nero6 (0.15) in DVDvideo or IsoUdf, I always had that
PowerDVD message for error 89020003.
Then I used writing tool in TMPG DVDauthor and played fine with no
problems.
I will try to get Nero6 (0.19) and check if it works.

Noki, the driver 1.31 I mentioned is in fact a firmware update direct from the Freecom site. I upgraded from 1.07. I have since tried to put 1.08 but the flash tool now cannot see my drive.
Thanks to all for their comments. I'll try and obtain power dvd 5 and see how that does. -
Further problems now - my machine keeps rebooting when it starts up. I don't think it's related and I cannot find the problem. I managed to get it up and running last night and left it running over night. But attempting a reboot this morning was unsuccesful and back to the same reboot problem.
Thanks to eveyone who has had input to this thread. I'll get back to tackling my DVD issue once I can fathom out what my new problem is.
Thanks -
I managed to isolate my problem down to InCD. I think I had it running when I flashed my drive to v1.31 from the Freecom site. I re-installed InCD and all is now ok.
I will now attempt a DVD write to ensure burner is ok.
Freecom engineer explained that v1.31 will be an NEC firmware repackaged but he could not tell me which one.
I cannot get the windows or dos flash utilities to see my drive to put it back to 1.07 or 1.08
Thanks all -
Back up your email and software on to CD and do a full wipe and windows re-install. Easy and faster than you might think.
This will solve all of your issues.
