I have no trouble capturing miniDV from an old but reliable Sony DCR PC120 camcorder using Firewire into my Dell PC. I simply wonder if there is a method to speed up the capture process so the tape does not just run at normal speed? Since I am not editing and just doing a capture, encode and burn (Windows Moviemaker -> Nero) I might as well save the time and buy the cheap DVD recorder and transfer and burn at the same time, as others have suggested. If however, the speed of the miniDV can be accelerated during the capture, then the 60 min of capture could become 5 minutes of capture. Is this possible?
Thanks
Billie.

No. You have to transfer the DV info from the tape in real time. It's a data transfer, not a capture. There may be special pro DV decks that can do this, but their cost would probably be much more than the camera.

All consumer/prosumer DV cams require 1x transfer. Some expensive DVCPro cams (TV News) cam do it up to about 3x speed. They actually run the tape transport at high speed.

Redwudz and edDV thanks for the response. I am leaning towards a Toshiba DR570 DVD Recorder which can be had for about a buck fifty.
