  1. Hi there,

    I'm trying to extract the mpg from a bin file of an VCD using ISOBUSTER. I've tried extracting it using the M2F2 mpeg frame filter, and saving the file as a .mpg, but when it finishes, I can't open it in windows media player. The weird thing is, I can open it in PowerDVD.

    I want to convert this VCD to a KVCD, but I get the error "File abc.mpg cannot open, or unsupported". Similarly, for WMP, I get Error 80040265.

    I've also tried running it through VCDGear (before and after extraction), but still no go.

    Can anyone help me with this problem??

    Thanks!

    (I initially thought this was a SVCD but I think I was mistaken, it's actually a VCD).

  2. It's not so weird that you cannot open it in Windows Media Player. It does not have a native mpeg 2 decoder, and it often has problems using mpeg 2 coders from other programs. If you can open it with PowerDVD you know at least that you basically have a working mpeg file.

    It sound like the problem is that this mpeg file does not have the correct header to be recognized by other programs because it was made part of a SVCD and then you extracted it. VCDEasy has a tool under its mpeg tool section called Cdxa2mpeg (Convert a mpeg file with a Riff header (.dat file) to true mpeg file.) I think that will do the trick.

  3. Not a big deal....windows media is missing a codec needed to play....I HIGHLY suggest getting the little program called AVICODEC.

    You can open any video or audio file in it, and it will tell you exactly what the file consist of, its run time, and if you have the needed codecs installed to play it.

  4. Oops, I think it's a VCD, not an SVCD.

    Here's the info I got from VCDEasy using the VCDxmInfo:

    Code:
    MPEG1, PlayingTime=4276.895s, Bitrate=1411200bps, PtsOffset=1714s, 320777 packets

    Video Stream: Motion Video, 352x288, 25fps (PAL), 1150kbps
    Audio Stream: Audio Standard MPEG layer2 Stereo, 44100Hz, 224kbps

    CRC = FDA836A6
    Size = 745485748
    Would anyone know why it wouldn't play in Windows Media Player or open in tmpgenc given this information??

    Thanks

  5. Yeah, it looks like VCD mpeg 1.

    But since you seem to have VCDEasy, convert this file with the tool I discussed in my first posting (dat to real mpeg) and then see if you can open it in those programs.

  6. So how would I create this DAT file? Use ISOBUSTER and how to extract it? I tried extracting it with the first option when i right click on the file in isobuster, but it gives me a lot of errors and I had trouble running that DAT file using VCDEasy.

  7. A VCD has four folders, one of which is MPEGAV.
    In the MPEGAV folder are one or more files labelled AVSEQ01.DAT, AVSEQ02.DAT etc.
    These .dat files are the mpeg 1 files for the VCD but they have the .dat extension instead of a .mpg extension because that is part of the VCD spec.
    So you don't turn them into .dat files, they already are .dat files, what you do once you extract them using Isobuster is to run them through the tool I mentioned above which gives them the proper mpeg header (and the .mpg extension.)
    Now if you're getting errors extracting using Isobuster then either the files are corrupt or the disc is damaged, because Isobuster is one of the best extracting tools around. I think you said you were working with a bin file. Do you have the cue file. Can you mount it on a virtual drive and play it? That's the way people normally deal with bin files, and what you would need to do to extract the .dat files within.

  8. I guess I didn't state my question clearly enough. I know that you have to use Isobuster to extract the dat file from the bin file. I've successfully mounted the image file onto Alcohol 120%, and the VCD plays fine in PowerDVD.

    Now, to restate my question in the previous post: once the bin file is loaded in Isobuster, and I am in the MPEGAV directory, when I right click on AVSEQ04.DAT (which is the file I want to extract), and a menu pops up, which one do I choose: Extract AVSEQ04.DAT, Extract Raw but convert to User Data, Extract but FILTER only M2F2 Mpeg frames, or Extract Raw Data?

    I tried the Extract AVSEQ04.DAT option, but when it extracts, I get "Unreadable sector" errors: Sector 17945 could not be read. Error: 05/64/01. Retry, Ignore this Sector, or Quit. And if I select Ignore All, and I run that dat file in VCDEasy, it doesn't work. I get the error: CDxa2mpeg.exe execution failed: unknown chunk id[] encountered (The file is not a MPEG file with RIFF header [.dat file])

    Thanks.

  9. Unfortunately, with that error message it seems that that part of the file is corrupt. You could try other data extraction programs but Isobuster is the best for VCD.

    P.S. the Extract but FILTER only M2F2 Mpeg frames is the preferred option, but given the error message, I don't think it will make a difference.

  10. You're right, it doesn't.. I just tried it that way. But why is it that I can play the VCD when I mount the bin file in Alcohol 120%?

  11. Perhaps the software player has a greater tolerance for errors than data extraction which requires a clean reading of every byte.

    You might try one more thing. Mount the image, and then do disc to disc copy in Alcohol, either to an image file or to a physical CD. Then try to extract from that.

  12. Yep!! Mounting the image and then copying the dat file onto my harddrive worked perfectly! Thanks!
