When I play a photo-montage on my DVD player using the same “slide” wipe effect, it alternatively looks smooth or jittery each time I play it.

At first I thought this had to do with the “Motion search accuracy” settings in TMPGenc (beta 12). Previously, I found in another case that (strangely) the Normal setting produced smoother slide wipes than the Better or Best settings. (In that case, I simply slide-wiped a BMP over a plain white background.)

However, in my latest test (using a different part of the montage that also uses a slide wipe) I am not so sure that the “Motion search accuracy” setting of Normal is superior to the Better or Best settings.

I converted the same 4 second AVI clip (where one BMP is slide wiped over another BMP) using the three different motion settings. Then I played the three MPEG-1 (704x480, 2520bitrate) files on my Pioneer 343 and I got random results.

Sometimes the Normal motion clip was smooth. But other times it was jittery. Same with the Better and Best versions.

My theory is that my Pioneer 343 is the “problem.”

1/ Has anyone else experienced this kind of thing?

2/ However, in spite of the seemingly random nature of the “jittery issue”, is there a preferred motion setting in TMPGenc (beta 12) when producing a photo-montage with some motion or slide-wipes (produced in Premiere)? As a rule, should I choose Normal, Better, or Best?

3/ In TMPGenc, should I select my source (which is simply scanned BMPs) as interlaced or non-interlaced?

4/ I have always set this at non-interlaced AND clicked on the de-interlaced filter… is that dumb? Or even necessary?
