  5. what you need is winlock or freelock but these add extra files to the toc but before cd finalizes it deletes them so when you try to copy comes up invalid toc so wont copie as the files are not on cdr it works on psx - dc backups so no reason why wont work on vcd as all original files are still there only toc which vcd player does not use is corrupted

  7. Sorry, but I doubt that this would work...

You can copy a VCD without doing a disc copy... and there is NO way of encrypting the video file and have it able to be played on any stand-alone player.

As far as I can see, it is absolutely impossible to copy protect a VCD and have it playable on essentially all hardware.

  8. it is only copiable if the person trying to copy can extract the dat file then run conversions to get it back to vcd format win lock is a basic protection program but there is more complicated ones that will do the job but require reasonablie advance computer knowledge winlock is the aesy way to start and exicutes protection with 3 clicks of the mouse about 3 secs couldnt be easier straight cd 2 image or cd 2 cd wont work

There are a couple of things you can do to a disk which will make it more difficult to copy but anyone who knows even the slightest bit about cd copying can get around them.

To prevent cd to cd copying you can use a program like winlock as already suggested or you can burn a dummy file to the disk. Make an mpg that is less than 4 secs and use it as the dummy. Most cd burners cannot burn tracks less than 4 secs. This nasty trick has been implemented on a couple of psx games.

To prevent people from easily copying the dat file to their hard drive you can edit the cue before burning. Make the length of the track longer than it actually is. (something like that, I can't remember the exact process.)

The disk will still play fine on all players but if you try to copy the dat to your hard drive it will keep trying to read after the entire file has been copied, resulting in an error.

To get around this you have to make a bin and cue and edit the cue back to its correct length or use a program like vcdcutter which can edit and save the file directly off the disk.

If you use both of these tricks then the person will have no choice but to edit the cue or use additional programs to get the dat file and reauthor the disk and for a newbie that would probably provide a fairly effective form of copy protection.

You will never find a way to prevent people copying (with what we have today, at least). If there was a way, then we wouldnt be able to still copy CDs would we? All you can do is make it harder, as adam said. People with the knowledge, good hardware and a utility such as CloneCD, will +99.99% of the time be able to copy anything that they want. You may prevent the many, but not the few.

    adam, just curious...
How can you burn a dummy file less than 4 secs if your own CDRW will not burn tracks less than 4 secs? Its like a catch 22, unless you have a burner that supports.

  12. Does anyone know where I can get Winlock from or the other one? I dont want to make it entirely copy protected, just so that it screws a few of the persons cd's before they realise.
