  1. hello,

I'm about to try and burn my first DVD but want to burn an AVI to the DVD rather than creating a standard DVD. I have a 14GB AVI file which ideally i would like to compress to around 4.7GB just enough to fit on a DVD.

Is there any software that can compress my AVI to theatspecific file size? Which codec should i use for maximum quality?

    Any suggestions welcomed

    Cheers,

  2. DivX will probably give the best compression but you may not need a DVD at all with DivX. Most full length movies I've got backed up to DivX in DVD quality are no more than 1 gig in size. All depends on length of the video, bitrate and so on.

  3. If you use Divx to encode your AVI file to fit onto a DVD I think you'll still be happy with the quality as most people are impressed with the quality of a 2 CD (1.6GB) Divx encoded file.

Just remember though to encode the file down to 4.3GB as that is the true file size that a DVD can handle, not the listed 4.7GB.

  4. is there anyway to work out roughly what DIVx compression settings would make a 4.3Gb file from the 14GB AVI file? or will have to just have to test untill i reach a near enough size?

I'm just thinking it could take a while if i'm just guessing.

    Cheers,

You need to calculate the bitrate:

    4,700,000 x 8 / # of seconds = bits per second

  6. There are bit rate calculators available on this web site. You simply plug in the length of the film in minutes, the audio bit rate you want, and the size of the file you want. The calculator will tell you what bit rate to use for the video. Virtual Dub can reencode the film for you.
