My Desktop starts instantly when the UPS is switched on

Recently I assembled a Desktop with the following:
Pentium IV 2.4 Ghz 800 Mhz
Intel D875 PBZ 800 Mhz
Corsair 256 MB 400 Mhz
Microtek Riva TNT64MB 32 MB AGP
Creative SB Live 5.1
D-Link Internal 56Kbps V.92 Data/Fax/Voice Modem
Samsung Combo drive
Seagate 5400 rpm 40 GB
Microtek ATX Cabinet & SMPS of 300 W
Whenever, I switch on the UPS, I make the following observation.
1. the processor cooling fan momentarily starts and stops.
2. The Power LED glows momentarily
3. The Harddisk also starts rotating momentarily
4. The light of the Combo drive also glows and stops.
Next, when I switch on the button of Cabinet, the PC starts booting. Where exactly is the problem of this sudden starting when the UPS is switched on ? How do I solve it ? Is it the SMPS or some wrong connections ?

What do you mean by this??

You have turned the UPS ON , then pressed the button of Cabinet (by this i am guessing ON switch) well of course it will turn ON.

Or am i missing something in the translation

Most new machines that I've dealt with check the power to see if it's there.
I've observed this with Dells and Compaqs..When you fist plug the power in (turning on UPS) the motherboard checks to see if power will go to the important devices. The computer will not boot to the OS, but just does a simple power test to the devices connected to the motherboard. Most newer NICs will also have a link like too, as they're PXE compliant. Might be the same in your case.

Let me explain again. First I switch on the UPS and the devices start momentarily and then stop. Next, I start the Desktop by pressing the Power ON button on the cabinet when the normal booting takes place. I think this is not normal. Why should the devices such as the processor fan, Harddisk, CD combo etc start momentarily and then stop when the UPS is switched on ? Where is the problem ? SMPS or wrong connections ? Should I get the SMPS changed to another ?

Stiltman is right. You may not have noticed when you plugged it in for the first time, turned on the PSU switch, or your UPS, but the PSU powered briefly to "learn" the board and components and to check for "Power Good".

An ATX has a wire called exactly that, "Power Good".

Most people don't turn off their UPS. Therefor they don't have that occurrence. Why do you, just out of curiousity?

My own goes into Suspend Mode, powers up at any keystroke, only shuts off on power loss.

No, I'm talking the PC. My UPS is always on.

I have selected in BIOS to have the 'puter power off rather than reboot when the power goes out. That would include when the power loss is long enough to drain the UPS.

I am speaking of when I have shut down for the session. If you don't select that, on an ATX, it will boot from the shut down condition, if your power goes out and comes back on.

And the UPS has me pissed, too. Mine is about 6 months old and, last night, with the rain and whatever from this hurricane my power just flickered, main machine rebooted every time.

So, evidently, my 6 month old UPS is already shot. That makes 3 I've gone through, so far.

Umm, did you connect the battery?
Most good (commercial) UPSs come with the batteries disconnected...
Most people over look this and just plug them in and think all is done...
Simple and very often mistake...Did it myself with my first one

Mine came with the batts connected, per the manual. In fact, my Tripplite consumer model warns that there are no user seviceable parts, assuming no replacing of batteries.

The hell of it is, my all systems go green light is lit.

So, now where am I?

Can't help you with that...are they managed via DB9? I would check to see with you have everything set right. Then I would do a load test to check the batteries. Then I would see if they execute a proper soft shutdown. If your comps blink with power surges and or grey outs, it sounds like either a battery is bad or you've overloaded their capacity


I through out 3 different tripplites that my clients insisted on getting (consumer grade non-managed). Even though they are over priced, I only use managed APCs for SOHOs. Work Work is a different story altogether.
