I read that alot of people dont like to use Nero for burning DVD's, try using Nero Express, I use it on a daily basis and it works great.

I can tell you that I have burned 600+ DVD's with Nero and the only glitch I ever ran into was with version 5.5.9.17, I cannot really remember the details but the next version fixed the problem. Now, I pretty much use it after ripping and using IFOedit or ripping and using DVD2One, DVD95Copy, DVD Shrink, ReMpeg etc... for transcoding or compression, but I have done many VCD's, SVCD's with TMPGEnc, Ulead MF1 and 2 and have not encountered problems with Nero. I think that most problems can be attributed to authoring glitches and the quality of the original video file. :P

I've burned many, many DVDs and vcds, cds, with Nero 5.5.10.28, and I have nothing but praise for it. No problems, whatsoever. However older versions have had bugs and have crashed on me. Use the latest version, inform yourself with a couple of handy user guides(like on this website) and you shouldn't have any problems.

  4. I noticed that nobody mentioned ulead movie factory for burning vcd/svcd
I use Ulead all the time. I really like their UI and options. I don't make many SVCD's anymore though. I author my home made DVD's with Ulead DVD Workshop and still burn with RecordnowMax. For a quick and dirty SVCD with menu's you can't beat uleaad Movie Factory

Wait till you buy a DVD player that none of your DVD's work on, then you'll change you mind real fast like me.

Thayne, if you rip it with DVDdecrypter in file format, and burn as DVD video,in Nero, you shouldn't have any problem with it,on any of the NEW DVD players. I have the following DVD players. Vsonic 9200mx(fairlynew model) Malata N996(older model),Power DVD, and Media player on computer, Playstation 2. Ironically the only player I've had DVD-Rs not work on is the PS2. Certain brand,DVD-RWs have had trouble on the Malata(UDF format burn ,Okay), though. This is either a problem with the media itself, or the fact the format isn't properly supported, with the player. Not with Nero. Every DVD-R(W)burned with Nero has played on the Vsonic, and the computer.

Nero Express sucks too, no matter what any one says, IMHO it is a basic program for CD BURNING. NERO has only 2 uses, Wav Editor and Cover Design, other than these 2 processes you need to see the light and use a program that works for DVD. Why is it always FREE with any crappy CDRW burner you buy? I have a dozen copy's of the crappy program laying around because it even come with rubber-mate trash cans, it SUCKS and they can not sell it on the open market!!!

None of the disks I burned with nero work on my Pioneer DV-250 or my brothers RCA DVD player. No problems with the Disks I burn with Recordnowmaxx. The nero burned disks work fine on my PC DVD-ROM and my Phillips DVD player, but I want maximum compatability and I like RNM UI better too.

Sounds like you're using an old version. Try the DVD-Video templates in 5.5.10.20 or higher

It seems to me, that the problem with Nero is that they release much too often. When the only apparent difference between success and failure is in the fourth decimal place of the version number, I fully understand why some (who was unfortunate enough to hit the forth decimal version that didn't do what they wanted a couple of times) aren't all that happy about the product. On the other hand, if you're lucky, and the capabilities you're looking for are working in the version you try, of course you think it's a great product.
I'd expect this behaviour from an open source project, not from the "Market Leader" in CD burning. In my opinion, what Ahead ought to do, is to sit down, ask themselves what capabilities (beyond the obvious: burn data to a CD-R(W)/DVD+-R(W)) they want in the application, focus on this, and test every tool and wizard before they release a new version, even if it's just a fourth decimal release.
Being in the market as long as they have been, they are obviously doing things right - But if you have to release once a week, there's something fundamentally wrong in the development process.

Well, Sony DRU burner owners get, RecordNow, MyDVD and PowerDVD (amongst others) with their burner - doesn't meant they're crap.

I'm just waiting for Nero 6 on July 18 - it should rock! Buth then saying that, the only difference between 6 and 5.5 is the video editing capabilites - something which we can all do at the moment.

p.s. love the U.N. funding thing!

the only difference between 6 and 5.5 is the video editing capabilities.

If you know the details, can you please elaborate on those editing capabilities?

  15. NERO is a Great Program, i've not had a single problem with it, however, I use it for what it is designed for and not for the rest of the basic functions.
If I want to do a VCD, I use VCDEasy or TSCV, if I want to burn Data or Copy CD's then I use NERO, unless CD is protected then I use Alcohol 120%
The Idea is, use a specific program for the task at hand or stop complaining! no ONE program will ever be the best in everything.

NERO = 12mb and has LOADS of features!
EZCD = 200mb and is FULL of absolutly nothing!
WinOnCD = 400mb and has same as NERO but more complicated!

Taking those into consideration, i'll take NERO anytime and day over it's main competition, I don't use it for Encoding and I don't use it for DVD ripping, it's simply not the purpose it was designed for, so it gives minimum features of it

Nero does suck, especially for playing on Pioneer stand alones

I'd highly recommend Prassi Primo DVD or it's newer version, i.e. Record Now Max.

The Veritas authored software is great !!!!! For info on RNM, go to www.sonic.com

  18. @spidey, my friend, you forgeting I own a Pioneer DV525 which is ancient by now, and before any of the VCDEasy and other programs came out, I only used NERO to create a VCD, and i've never had one that didn't work :P

  21. If we who dont like Nero are that stupid as txpharoah and some others here states, why dont we **** up our VCDs when burning with other programs? Sad for you guys that you been using burner software since the DOS period, must have been hard for you, since you want us stupid guys to respect you/feel with you coz of it. Maybe you should asume that you are not the only one who been doing this stuff for years? You are welcome to use Nero, and i will use VCDEasy (not v.1.1.6, free is my favorite word).

I would disagree. I would think that BECAUSE Ahead is such a market leader, they strive to keep up with the monthly/weekly/daily/hourly changes in technology unlike other software programs. Sure, give RecordNow as an example of great software for DVD-Video, but it has limitations in other areas that are never given attention. And let's not forget that Nero updates are not necessarily for DVD-Video or VideoCD, though they do occur. What I see is interface tweaks and added burners more than anything else. The first major DVD-Video problem ended with 5.5.9.0, and the second one ended with 5.5.10.20, almost a year apart, so I think they did sit down and think it through. And let's not forget that the greatest benefit of Ahead is the free updates, not some $100 upgrade every 6 months to a year.

This one is easy. You either try to do something Nero does not support, or you do not fully understand the program, or you are using an old version that may have had bugs or pre-dated the options you desire.

For Nero, VCD was an afterthought. The program was made for data, plain and simple. If memory serves correctly, they came out in 1997, a program entirely in German, and it blew away Adaptec applications. I somewhat remember using a beta version, but that was long ago. They're only now overcoming that "date-only" image with quality DVD-Video burning, though UDF versions should probably be an option you can choose while in the DVD-Video template. If you want a fancy VCD program, stick with VCDeasy, as it was made for VCDs.

How fair would it be for me to say VCDeasy sucks for writing data and DVDs? I'd be an idiot to even make that comment with any sort of seriousness.
