    Doesn't really matter how big the file is as much as it does how long the movie is in time. If the frame rate's lower it should be faster too. I get about 8 or 9 times the length of whatever I'm encoding on my 466mhz.

    Since you don't give much details on your AVI file (resolution, compression mode,etc..) it's hard to say.
    On my very slow machine (266Mhz), it takes 20min to convert such an AVI (which is 1 min 30 secs if it is captured via Firewire, DV format) into MPEG-1. It's crazy isn't it. But I am getting my 1.2GHz machine really soon.
