I have an .avi from the internet and the accompanying subtitles as .srt file. I don't see no subs in the preview. To make sure I even set the position to 50. On the same note: Can I use subtitles in VCDs? I wouldn't mind if they were har copied into the mpeg, as the movie is letterboxed and leaves enough room in the lower black bar. Or can I encode the video and audio in ffmpegx and use another tool to make a SVCD/VCD with subtitles?
And yes, I rwad everything that was said about subs here...

Subtitles can only be "burned" in the video when encoding to mpeg-2 (so SVCD, CVD and DVD) and with the option "Use mplayer to decode" enabled.

So, "burned into" means the subs will be part of the video? (If yes, are there options to have real choosable subs?) I just try it with using the CVD preset. What I note: There is not "author as CVD" option, so I use SVCD. And I don't have a "sub palette"?

The subs will be part of the video in a permanent way. CVD should be authored as SVCD. For sub palette, copy an IFO file from any DVD.

so, that ifo/palette file thingy is necessary for subs? Because i didn't specify any and don't see no subs in the part of the movie that's already encoded...

  6. It's needed to set correct colors, or you can see black letter on black background. Make sure you're also using "Use mplayer to decode" option (Options tab).

    I see an error:

    font: can't open file: /Users/foo/.mplayer/font/font.desc
    font: can't open file: share/font/font.desc

    and no subs... sigh...

  8. Have you installed the font package?

  9. Guest
You mean the "Subtitles iso-8859-1.pkg"? Sure, I did everything as told in the readme... But I can do that again... (The last two updates only the app itself changed?)

  10. Guest
You know what? The installer says:

    "Subtitles for MPlayerOSX
    iso-8859-1 encoding

This package contains a set of subtitles for use with MPlayerOSX. They will be installed to the directory /usr/local/share/mplayer/font."

    But the software searches in:

    "font: can't open file: /Users/foo/.mplayer/font/font.desc
    font: can't open file: share/font/font.desc "

    Maybe that's the problem?

As I wrote just above, the installer talks about "/usr/local/share/mplayer/font." But I can't find even "/usr/local/share/mplayer" after just running the pkg installer
If I look into the pkg I don't see anything I can use...

  12. Try installing the mplayer binary coming from this link. Does it change anything?

  13. Guest
I already have that for mplayer OS X. Though I'm not sure what the guy meant when he wrote:

"If you have Mplayer OSX copy this file to /usr/local/bin"

"this file"? There is a folder with many files after the download:

    codecs.conf
    input.conf
    MAN
    mencoder
    menu.conf
    mplayer
    readme.rtf

all I see in /usr/local/bin is mplayer, where does the "conf" stuff go?

And I see none of the font stuff there

  14. You must use the engines installer application to install it. You only need to select the "mplayer" file. The link I've provided is a different version than the standard one.

Now it seems to work, thx
So is the mplayer you want people to get normally broken?

  16. It seems it work in some cases and doesn't in other cases. It now appears that the stablest mplayer binary is the 03/16/2003 one and I'll change download URLs accordingly.

Will it be possible some day to have real subtitle tracks? Or is there any other software for Mac OS X that can make sub tracks for SVCDs?

  18. Guest
    Phewww...

The subs are not in synch

Looks as though they run slower then the movie, as far as I can tell. What to do?
