when you use Virtualdub, how are you doing the cutting?

give me a step-by-step and I'll see if I can spot your problem.

  3. i open up the video. then i drag the bar where i want it to start and press the half black arrow pointing to the left. then i do the same for where i want the video to end. it works fine if i try to cut out a piece in the middle. i think it's not working because i'm cutting too little in the beginning. the video is an hour and 10mins and i'm just cutting off the first 10secs.

the video is 710mb i need to some how make it around 690mb

it sounds like you are marking stuff, but not actually doing anything with the marks.

try this - set your beginning mark point (Mark In) at the beginning of your clip.

Set your Mark Out point at 10 seconds (or at the end of what you want to cut out).

Press Delete. That should cut out the segment you marked. Now set Video to Direct Stream Copy, and Save As a new file.

let me know how that works for you.

Sure, reencode with a lower bitrate.

Virtualdub is making cuts at "Key" frames, use the yellow key buttons to locate the key frames and make your cuts there. Every clip has to start with a key frame and that's what Vdub is making you do.

  11. Use vdub, open your video. Select video, full processing mode, then compression and choose the codec you want to use and the configurations for that codec (i.e. the lower bitrate). You can use direct stream copy for the audio. Then select file, save as AVI.

  12. is there someway i can find out what the bitrate of the video is now?

  13. Right click on the file in explorer then click on properties. Under the summary tab it will show the bitrate in kilobytes/sec, so multiply by 8 to get kilobits/sec.

  14. i don't see bitrate. there is frame rate and data rate. is it one of those?

  15. ok the data rate was 175, multiplied by 8 is 1400. so i made it 1320 to make the file size less but the file actually got bigger. thats weird. but at least i get the idea, i guess i'll do some trial and error. thanks for your help Craig Tucker!

  16. i last question. does the encoding mode, aka bitrate mode, matter? right now its set on 1 pass

  17. The more passes you use the better quality the finished video is likely to be, but this is of course at the expense of time taken to encode.

  18. so if i do it at 1300 bitrate and do 1 pass will the file size be the same as if i do it with 2 pass? time really doesn't matter to me

  19. Yes the filesize will be the same.
