if a dvd is attempted to be played on a vcd player, what can happen to the player.

DVDs are NOT CD based media. They are complete different. You might as well have put a CD in a VCD player upside-down.

Well maybe that's a little extreme but the analogy is about the same. Like putting a laser disc on a record player... only not quite as harmfull.
