Evertime i encode a SVCD movie with TMPGEnc Plus, The quality doesn't look as good as it use to be with the older version of TMPGEnc. What's up with that?

  2. I haven't had time to compare and carefully test the different versions but the newer Tmpgenc (2.55 and up) seem to produce blurrier results when making SVCDs.

I think the resizing engine has changed ... encoded video looks blurrier than before ... it seems like Tmpgenc is using bilinear resizing instead of bicubic. The sharpest Tmpgenc that I used was version beta 12.

A while back, I remember doing some comparisons and finding that Tmpgenc encodes provided sharper details (but more blocks) than CCE. Now it seems that CCE is sharper. Perhaps, Tmpgenc is trying to implement some internal noise reduction by slightly blurring what it encodes.

You can avoid this blurriness by filtering and resizing your video in VirtualDub and then frameserving it to Tmpgenc (don't let Tmpgenc resize). This process provides visibly clearer results. It will give your eyes more relief from the blurriness.

On a positive note, Tmpgenc still has an unparalleled noise reduction filter that can take out TV/Video signal noise grain without producing unnatural color effects or taking out too much detail. I've shuffled through numerous VD filters and refined my settings and filter chains and find that I still need Tmpgenc's noise reduction filter to take out video signal transmission grain/noise. The results look good afterwards. I have nothing but praise for Tmpgenc's noise reduction filter (except the slow speed).

So, give VirtualDub a shot in improving your quality but don't give up on Tmpgenc just yet; it's still essential in making good SVCDs.

  3. I wish I could use the TMPGEnc Noise Reduction filter in VDub. Nothing Compares.

I've also notice that the TMPEGnc plus has a few more options that let you choose from..

    In the project wizards..

    CBR standard format

    VBR standard format

VBR long-sustained format (out of standard)

are any of these above list on the older TMPGnc?

  10. I know that the last decent version for PAL was 2.56, but if you don't mind the 25% reduction in speed and the loss of the new editing features, then version 12a is hard to beat (plus it has free MPEG2 encoding).
