  1. I know this is a vague question, since the quality of the DivX compression would affect the answer, but a friend was trying to tell me today that DivX is higher quality than a satellite TV feed. I found this hard to believe. Is there any truth to this?

  2. Oui c'est vrai! (yes it's true!) At least from my opinion. Most satellite feed is in Mpeg2 format (same as SVCD or DVD), which generally has less advantages than Divx. Divx offers GREAT quality for a small file size. So technically, if you had a divx file to compress to the same size as a satellite feed (i know this sounds confusing), the divx would win!

  3. another way to explain is if you had an mpeg-2 file at 2500kbps and a mpeg-4 (divx) file at the same bit rate (2500kbps) you would get much higher quality and probebly wouldb be worth making the resolution higher......here is another example:

    MPEG-2: 720x576@2500kbps

    MPEG-4(DivX): 1280x720@2500kbps

these would be almost the same quality but the DivX would have the advantage as it has a higher resolution.....i am probably a little bit wrong with the resolution but it is only for demonstration purposes.....

  4. I find that DirectTV and DishNetwork have horrible quality. I can't stand watching it, even on a non-hdtv. but then again, I don't really like the quality of DVD either. Divx is good at high bitrates, but even at really high bitrates, you can still see compression artifacts.

  5. By high bitrates a mean like 10000kbps.
