Honestly, you can't. What's gone is gone, and you can't get it back.

Depending on the problems you might be able to make incremental improvements, but everything has a trade off and a cost. Cost one is that any changes you make will require you to re-encode, which takes time and risks quality. Highly compressed video often shows blocky artifacts from the compression. There are filters to try to reduce or remove these artifacts, but they can also cost you detail in other areas. RMVB is probably the worst format to work with as few programs handle it well.

It is far easier to improve good quality source that it is to rescue low quality downloaded video. Your best bet is to find a better source.

    What?! You guys are insane.

I routinely convert my VCDs to HD, with 9.7 surround. At 25 cents a disc for the latest releases, it doesn't make sense to buy Blu-Ray.

    9.7 surround?

    Supreme2k,

That's some serious bass you have in that setup... I'm with you on the VCD -> Bray conversion. I've got my orignal Betamax on its fourth upgrade now. The initial adapter I built for Beta to VHS wasn't too bad. Radio Shack had the needed parts. Putting a in a CD player to get VCD to play was a little tougher. Lots of wires in those IDE cables to get soldered just right. The next step to DVD was easy: just replace the laser - Viola! I even had a little foresight and got a blue laser. Paid off since now my Blu-Rays play perfectly! The upconversion is incredible from that old player - on composite cables too!

Now, to replace that wired remote with a wireless one and I'll be all set.
    Have a good one,

I routinely convert VHS to DVD in better quality than the VHS was -- not a joke, I'm being serious -- but that's about the extent of it. You still have leeway with analog.
