  1. Hi,

I just set up my pc to record tv shows...i'm using virtualdub to capture and am using the Huffyuv codec to capture.

The problem I am having is getting decent quality. What I would like is to have the vcd quality to look like the captured AVI? Is this possible? How?

What settings do I use in TMPGENC?

What's the best way to achieve the best quality when converting from a tv captured video?

All help is welcomed and appreciated

    Thanks in advance

VCD is limited, so don't expect exactly the same you see on TV.
It is okey for typical movies, some anime and typical tv series.
It is not enough for music videos, scifi movies/tv series and athletic material.
There are some advance VCD encoding methods, which may make the results better, but don't expect miracles!
Do a forum search, there are plenty posts about the subject.

As "SatStorm" stated VCD quality is limited.

I have a good quality cable TV signal going into my primary capture/encoding system. When I encode to VCD resolution there is a noticable quality difference between the VCD and what I see coming into the TV in my apartment. When I capture/encode at CVD (352 x 480) resolution it is hard to tell a quality difference between the CVD and the original signal that came strait into the TV.

Because TV capture will be interlaced and VCD is MPEG-1 and MPEG-1 doesn't support interlace, I would suggest using MPEG-2 and SVCD format.

Tmpgenc can produce very good results there. I would pay a visit to the www.kvcd.net and check the Tmpgenc templates for high compression low file size SVCD templates. Although they don't do what they claim (at least if quality is a concern), they significantly enhance the quality to the point where you can fit well over an hour on a SVCD (at VBR ~ 2000kbps).
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

I think we do what we claim
KVCDx3 "Full Screen" sample (528x480): http://www.kvcd.net/test-sea.mpg ( Use WinDVD or PowerDVD to view )
That's the way the movie looks on ONE CD 8)

    Enjoy,
