  1. I am able to burn mpegs I have downloaded off the internet onto my DVD-RW and save them to a DVD-RW disc and view them on my dvd player on my computer, but NOT my standalone Sony DVD player that says it allows DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW. Should I save the mpeg file as something else? What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks!

Some DVD players allow you to do just that. But not many (I think). SONY players are famous for allowing only strictly compliant DVDs to play only. Some people use SONY DVD players just to make sure their DVDs are authored correctly.

I have a yamakawa 215 player that plays anything you throw at it. I very often burn VCD or SVCD mpeg files on an RW (quick & dirty) either to verify picture quality or to enjoy an episode.

However, I have found out that you cannot overcome a 1Gb limitation. An MPEG file longer than 1Gb will only play it's first Gb of movie. The rest disappears. It doesn't dissapear physically, but the player won't play it.

Treebeard is correct. You must do some learning with a DVD authoring program. I would recommend ULEAD DVD Workshop. The demo is free for the first month and you should either decide it's good for you by then and buy it or grow beyond it and move forward. For starters it allows you maximum ease in authoring and you can also make simple title selection menus easily.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
