I just downloaded a certain movie in two parts (717 and 697 mb) that when i try to open to convert in TMPG gives me the message "file type unsupported." The thing is all of my other .avi's work?? Can anyone suggest a reason for this??

Get gspot. It tells you what codecs were used in most files.

Try installing DivXPro5.03 [Newest Version] also IF that doesn't help just install Nimo Codecs Package 5.0,
Hope it works for you, replay back IF you have problems.
