  1. how can i extract sound from an avi file?

I'm trying to use VirtualDub but i keep getting the following message:

"the requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format, check that the sampling rate and the channel count of the input match those of the requested format"

    i'm stumped!

Don't know exactly what your settings are......But as a general pointer ....If it says that ...and your audio is set for direct stream copy, change it to full process mode.....and if it said it under full process then change to direct stream..

    3 suggestions:
    1. Make sure you have the required codecs installed, use Gspot to test.
    2. Try AVI2WAV to extract.
    3. Try Goldwave to extract (my choice).
All should be available in the tools section.

Sounds like your trying to convert an AC3 to .WAV under full processing mode, either that or its using a MP3 with a higher bitrate than the one you have installed.

    At a guess its AC3

    Vdub
    audio > direct stream copy
    SAVE AVI

Vdub > File > File information
That will show you the audio type, if it says 5 channel unknown its AC3
