For basic cutting/trimming (my analogy is a loaf of bread; I want to remove a few interspersed slices from the loaf), what's the best free/cheap software tool?

I started playing with VirtualDub last night, but had a hard time figuring out how to use the controls.

After cutting, I then want to take the pieces and turn them into a single AVI again.

Suggestions? Thanks.
