i'm trying to encode subs into a movie file and followed all the necessary step shown in the website but when i tried previewing the movie file on virtualdub, there' no sound. the subs appear on the movie but no sound. wat is wrong here??

Make sure you are capturing in mono, make sure your RECORDING volume has proper line selected, and make sure all your cables are routed correctly.

i'm not trying to capture anything. i have an .avi file and subs file. i'm trying to encode the subs into the avi file.

i had the same issue while adding seperate video and audio files.
the sound is being encoded though you wont hear it till the file is complete.
when the file is not being altered or changed(beside the format of course) the sound is audible. when changing or merging other files the sound was not in the preview FOR ME. let the file encode, it will have sound when complete.-Beware of the n00b mafia-
