Hello, the names Lou and I'm new to the whole DV world... blah, blah, blah...

So, I finally understand after reading through all these abreviations and how to's, that I cannot burn AVI directly from Nero to either VCD or SVCD, although it did work for DVD through NeroVision but only on the drive I burned it from... My question is, when and where do I convert my AVI files to MPEG or whatever it is I should convert them too?

Does Premiere hand this or Nero? or do I need yet another program for that? Please help, I'm running out of CDMedia and hair.

    thanks in advance,
    Lou

TMPGEnc can handle all your AVI to (S)VCD needs. It is a free program for MPEG-1 (VCD) encoding, and there is a 30-day trial for MPEG-2 (SVCD) encoding, after which you must purchase a licensed MPEG-2 encoding version.

    www.tmpgenc.com

After you've converted the AVI to S/VCD, just burn it in Nero. You'll find more detailed guides on converting on this site.

So I downloaded the TMPGEncoder, and it converted my AVI's just fine, now Nero wont burn any of my MPEG's, it keeps rejecting all my CD's and giving me error logs that I havent a clue what they mean. Is burning video this complicated? Should I even be using NeroVision? I've tried both Nero and NeroVision with the same bad results.

I must be missing something... ugh!

When you converted in TMPGEnc, did you use an MPG template? If so, which? NTSC VCD, PAL VCD, etc.

When you start Nero, just select the encoding resolution (NTSC or PAL) you made you mpg as, then just drag the mpg into the cd layout box, and burn it. Thats all I do, and I never get problems.

    TMPGEnc Settings...

    CBR Standard format
    Video-CD = NTSC MPEG-1
    Video/Audio File = AVI
    Video Type = Interlace
Field Order = Bottom Field First (field B)
    Aspect Ratio = 4:3 525 line (NTSC, 704x480)
    CD-R 80min (VCD/SVCD) (media is 80min 700mb)
    (check) Start encoding immediately

    (using the wizard)

the video was also edited in Premiere as Windows NTSC

I've burned like 30 duds last night, I tried various settings and even going back into premiere (with a 30 sec vid so I wouldn't have to render each time for hours) all that show's up on the disks are CDI, EXT, MPEGAV, SEGMENT, VCD folders with files that don't do anything.

and thanks for helping me out Legionpc,
    -Lou

Ok, heres how you should do it:

Hit the button on the bottom right hand corner called Load. Find the NTSC-VCD template file you extracted with TMPGEnc itself.

How on the boxes to the left where it says video source, audio source and output file, just hit open in the video source box, find the avi, then hit Ok. It'll automatically put the avi in the audio source box for you. Then below, specify an output file and then at the top, hit Start.

I encode my VCDs in non-interlace mode, you seem to be doing it in interlace. I'm not sure if thats causing the problem, but who knows. The 704x480 res you have for aspecr ratio isn't a VCD res either. You should be using 352x240. Just give the template method a whirl.

I followed your directions but still no results. All I get are the same folders burned to the CD. I'm wodering if maybe I'm missing some kind of Codec (even if I bought the ones from Nero, both DVD and VCD) Or maybe its the cheap media I'm burning on (but why would the folders burn?) then last but not least am I able to do all this with a DVD/RW, CDRom/RW Combo Drive? Anyone ever hear of problems with Panasonic DVD/CDR RW Combo burners?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong in Premiere... I should try Pinnacle 8 instead.

    bleh,
    Lou.

thats whats supposed to be on the disk .. what do you mean they dont do anything ? have you tried playing in standalone dvd player?

in the MPEGAV dir there should be a big file named *.dat (<somename>.dat) - thats your movie .

When I burned a DVD it seemed to work fine and play back on the drive I burned it on, (minus the no audio and crappy resolution) I have yet to test it on any other player except a Sony Playstation (which didn't work). So now that I'm out of DVD Media, I decided to try and burn on CDRom Media (VCD)... which I can't for some reason make work. I could of sworn at one time I open up an AVI file from a burned disk a friend gave me long ago.

    what gives?

  10. Do you have premiere 6.5? If so, it will convert your avi to VCD, SVCD or DVD ready mpegs
