What I did is follow one of the guides using virtual dub no idea what is correct just followed it:
Installed the codecs from http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html
The 3.11 the 4.x and the divX audio compressor.
Captured 320x240, divx mpeg4 Low-Motion YUY2 interleave. maybe YUY2 interleave is wrong The sound I chose CD quality 44.1khz 16 bit stereo 172kb/s. The captured video plays just fine in windows media player.
I then tried to compress the audio (using virtualdub)
Opened the file i generated above (only 6 seconds long)
video set to "direct stream copy"
audio set to Full processing
compression selected the divx
set save as file and it started the process of conversion
My cpu started to run at 100%. the elapsed time is counting and at 15 minutes it has not yet processed a frame or any bytes of video or audio. any ideas the compression is running but not really processing maybe I did not install a codec or patch or something that I need.

Use mp3 audio instead, most divx's uses it.

Seems like "SOUND" advice
Thanks for the link
I obviously have alot of reading to do on this divx stuff but some quick questions come to mind
1) There is alot about divx to: SVCD etc. Will going MP3 prevent this as a future possibility. I know MP3 is decent sound for sure but would it convert to 48Khz and sound as least as good as it does as an MP3? does seem like anything coverts to anything but I am still learning.
2) Is my understanding here correct:
Select under Video->Full proccessing Note: this is from the guide referenced in the previous post.
3) In virtualdub I am never sure what format to use when I select custom format to set the capture resolution. I always choose YUY2 interleave as many guides recommend for later encoding to SVCD/CVD. I certainly don't understand what this setting does but it seems to work. What is the recommended setting for divx captures done on the fly or a huffyuV capture for conversion to divx? I rather use a huffyuv capture I can capture without frame loss to 640x480 no problem but I run out of CPU power at this resolution trying to capture divx on the fly.
Thanks again
