I've got a 6Gb mpeg file, which I'd like to put onto DVD so that I can watch in my standalone player.
Whats the best way to get this file size down. I assume I need to re-encode, but whats the best tool for this which allows me to get the file size right first time, rather than going for the trial and error approach.
Many thanks in advance.

Use a bitrate calculator (there are several in the tools section) to find waht bitrate is required to get it to fit. Use Tmpgenc to re-encode. The author and burn.
