Check and make sure your standalone DVD player can play DVD-R or DVD-RW disks. Use the DVDPlayer guide to the left to check your player. You could also try the DVD on a different DVD player.

if your dvd-r will not play in your stand-alone player when burnes with nero, this is because your stand alone supports UDF1.02.
when you burn a dvd with nero using DVD VIDEO ,settings nero burns the disc in UDF 1.05.
most players especially new models support this.........but some older players do not.hence when you put the disc in your player you get "disc error" or something similar, but if you put the disc in, say your friends player it plays o.k.
    follow these steps.

1/ make sure all your movie files are in a folder called VIDEO_TS (must be caps).
2/ open nero, click close wizard.
3/ in the new compilation choose dvd (obviously)
4/ instead of choosing DVD VIDEO, choose DVD-ROM (UDF)
5/ all settings should be ok at default, but if not, make sure no multisession is ticked, and UDF1.02 is selected as a physical partition.
6/ click new, locate your VIDEO_TS folder with the movie you want to burn.drag and drop into the burn box on the left, then click burn.
7/ when finished enjoy in you stand alone for the first time.

hope this helps everybody with this problem.
i personally burn all movies like this because, dvd's play in ALL standalones.

headstate: added your tips to my guide. wonder why you cant select udf mode in dvd-video mode and why is udf 1.5 default when 1.02 is more dvd compliant?.

  8. This sounds interesting. Just a quick question. I have a brand new Sony player and have perfect luck burning with nero the normal way, but the disc won’t play in the rest of my families players. So my question is, if I try burning one in the dvd-rom mode and change the settings as you say to do, will it still work in my new player? Are the new players “ backwards compatible” ??

    baldrick,
i have already discussed this issue with nero themselves, they say udf1.05
is the most compliant format , which is probably correct to an extent.about 90% of new players use this but most machines older than about 18 months old use udf1.02.the problem is if you burn using udf1.05, discs will only play in machines supporting 1.05. where as if you burn using 1.02 they will play in machines supporting 1.05 and the older machines supporting 1.02.so really you are correct udf1.02 is the most compliant format.using this format ensures dics play in all machines.
maybe in future versions of nero they will change or give you the abilty to change the udf in dvd video because they are well aware of the problem.

    MCD:
yes your correct the new players are backwards compatable, if you are having problems with your discs playing in families players, burn using the udf1.02 and discs will play in your sony and your families.

also forgot to mention, vob instant cd/dvd and prassi primo dvd, all burn using UDF1.02...........................speaks for itself, the boffins at nero have got it wrong.nobody ever has problems with these software, just nero!!
when you burn the movie using DVD-ROM (udf) setting,it burns it the exact same way as the DVD-VIDEO setting apart from:
nero burns using udf1.02 instead of 1.05.
and in the dvd-video setting, nero already has a AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder made up for you ready to drag in your vob's.
under dvd-rom (udf) setting you have to make up your own VIDEO_TS folder.
that's all the difference there is'nt anything special about burning using dvd-video, it's just called this because the folders are ready made for you.

    Hi headstate, very informative.

I author my DVD's using DVD workshop then burn using nero (workshops burning engine wont burn to my zero defex discs). However I dont author as folders I author an ISO image then burn that with nero. Should I choose DVD-rom rather than DVD video in this case also. The discs I have made have played in every standalone I have tried except the PS2, could this be the reason the PS2 wont play the discs.

    craig,
to be honest i dont know...... but you could always give it a go and see what happens.
one thing i do know about my ps2 is,that if i use cheap media, discs will not play in my ps2 but they play super in my stand alone.the only way to get a dvd-r to play in my ps2 is if i use the expensive discs.the most reliable for me which work in my ps2 all the time is verbatim.
    hope this helps
