Proper setting in TMPGEnc for non-standard res? Divx>DVD

I have tried various settings with TMPG and the same problem occurs whenever I played the final burned DVD to both my DVD players, the bottom of the movie would be cropped(so the subtitles are only partially seen).

The source resolution of the divx I am trying to convert is 544x400 or 1.36:1 ratio. I pretty much left the Video tab alone for DVD conversion, but in the video tab, I selected 1:1 VGA and selected several aspect ratios. A couple of the aspect ratios I chose had the black borders on the side(when played with Media Player and PowerDVD), so I thought that would work. But when I put it into my DVD players, the borders doesn't show up and the bottom is still cropped!!

I really need help with this. I have been converting for a while and can't seem to find the solution. The only program that seem to work right now is B's DVD(www.bhacorp.com), which encodes movie and burn it onto DVD..... the result is that while the whole movie shows, too much space is used on the DVD and I can't change it to anything lower than 5mbps.

Right now I am using Virtual Dub to extract the audio out(for audio syncing), TMPGEnc to encode the movie, and Ulead DVD workshop to auther....

Can anyone help me??

If I'm reading this correctly, you should select your options like this:
Under Video, apsect ratio 4:3
Under Advanced, source aspect ratio 1:1, video arrange method - full screen (keep aspect ratio).

Tried that already. The damn movie still has the bottom cropped once played on both the DVD players. It appears find on PowerDVD and Media Player for some reason.... Could it be because of the DVD Players? Both are different model from Apex.

Then I would say the problem is the DVD player. I have no experience with Apex players, but try changing the display to Letterbox if it's not there already. Also try the other options (Widescreen, etc. )

I tried letterbox, pan&scan, and widescreen. None worked....... I have finally found one setting(1:1 VGA, center) that seems to work.... it's just that the movie looks pretty weird, very squarish. So I have a few more test to go.....

Try Center (keep aspect ratio) if you haven't already. As a last resort, you might try Center (custom size) but you'll have to calculate the movie size manually (I can help you with that)

It is your TV cropping the image and is normal behaviour.

Does your Divx have the subtitles already included in the avi or are they in a seperate file and you add them during encoding to mpeg. If the latter why not just re-encode but move the subtitles up a few pixels (20 would be a good guess to start).

Wait... TV cropping the image is normal behavior??? Why didn't no one tell me this!! So I have to use the Center(custom size) to find the right resolution so that the whole thing will display??

The subtitles are already in. When I played the movie on the TV, I will only see the very top part of the subtitles, the rest are just cropped out.

Well, either they are very small subtitles or your TV is cropping the image somewhat more than is usual. Check your TV manual or on screen menus to see if you can adjust it. It may be called something like overscan.
