Hi everyone,
this is my first post here, so I hope this is the right section.
I made a small Windows video player called FAFI, short for FindAFrameInterpolation. The main goal is simple: smoother video playback through real-time frame interpolation.
The player is focused on easy use, GPU-accelerated playback, and smooth motion without needing a complicated setup. It can play local videos, supports YouTube / network playback, subtitles, upscaling, and export through ffmpeg.
Some of the main points are:
- real-time frame interpolation
- GPU-accelerated playback
- optional RIFE interpolation
- YouTube / network video support
- subtitle support
- upscaling
- video export through ffmpeg
- simple Windows installer
I made it because I wanted a lightweight player mainly focused on smoother motion and practical playback features.
The app is free to use, but it is not open source. The GitHub page is mainly for downloads, releases, and information.
I would appreciate feedback about playback smoothness, performance, format support, export, or general usability.

Thanks for taking a look and have a nice day.

Greetings and good evening, eVersor! What a wonderful surprise to find someone making their own frame smoothing video player! I am definitely interested as my current solution, pot player using avisynth plugins (uses cpu entirely, no video card) and madvr as the renderer, is not quite a smooth for my tastes so I would love to try yours . The fact that it is free is fantastic, thank you!
I have a nvidia rtx 3070 and I noticed the default frame smoothing engine called MEMC works great! As far as I can tell it is smoother than Potplayer using Avisynth and Madvr. I saw that you have specific options for Variable Refresh (VRR) monitors and Match Hertz, that's really cool, maybe that's why your program is better for me compared to PotPlayer and Avisynth. Great work!
When I tried to switch into RIFE as the motion smoothing model, the program crashed almost instantly. Upon restarting the program, it instantly crashes again. Seems like it's trying to remember I asked to use Rife, and doesn't understand that it keeps crashing, so it becomes unusable. I had to delete the installation folder and re-install it to get it working again, that's weird. Perhaps my RTX 3070 isn't fast enough for RIFE in real time but I was surprised it just crashed.
I am very impressed with your technical knowledge and generosity to make this program for us. Really, thank you! Hard working, benevolent smart people like you are very much welcomed into the community.
I do have a few suggestions on general user interface ideas.
Can you add a hotkey to exit the player instantly upon pressing it? This could be useful while at work and you have to close the player immediately with no notice and no nag message if you are really sure you want to close it. Could you also make this hotkey user configurable?
I see that you added a little graphic with a cat face animation when closing the player. Could you add the option to skip any confirmation dialogue and animations when exiting? This would make closing the player faster.
Could you add the user configurable option to change how many seconds are skipped ahead when pressing the arrow keys? It's by default set at 10 seconds and not able to be changed, some users may find this too much time per press and want more granularity of control such as 5 seconds.
Can you add a user configurable hotkey to enter into full screen? And perhaps make it so pressing that same hotkey, when already in fullscreen, will exit back out of it into window mode? Gives another option besides double clicking.
Um, I noticed you included a button called 'Illegal' that is in the general right click menu. For fun, I clicked on it and almost had a heart attack when I saw all the graphics and fake screen showing error messages, etc. This joke button might be seen as in bad taste by many users and I would suggest you consider removing it if your goal is more mainstream acceptance of your program.
The name of your program is FAFI but the default installation directory simply calls it VIDEOPLAYER. Was this intended? Do you think you might want to include FAFI in the name of the default installation directory?
Overall FAFI is off to a great start and is already better than PotPlayer with Avisynth for frame smoothing, and also better than the dated Splash Player from 2019. Honestly I think your player is the best quality free solution for frame smoothing that is currently out there in the PC ecosystem. Especially for video card assisted techniques and not strictly CPU techniques. I hope to see much more development and tinkering with FAFI in the future!
