  1. Hello, I hope everyone is doing well.

For a while, I've been using Yuhan Blu-Ray Creator to author discs. And while I've been satisfied with the end results, noticing that the software only did one-pass encodes made me want to try other encoders. For x264, not difficult. It's x265 for 4K that has given me difficulty. Especially since I'm on MacOS, and there aren't as many options for video encoders. Not to mention the BD-R limitation of 50 GB discs. For every encode I do of a video, I'm overwhelmed when I open MediaInfo and see a long paragraph of settings posted, it makes it difficult to see if the video actually meets UHD-BD compliance. I'll share my most recent test to show what I'm getting at. I tried translating what I knew were UHD-BD requirements into Shutter Encoder, and adjusted bitrate settings to fit my disc. And if someone who is more knowledgeable then me can either verify what I did meets UHD-BD compliance, or doesn't and where I went wrong, that would be extremely helpful. Thank you!

The only mistake I can spot immediately is I put the wrong command for bufsize and it defaulted to 108000. But that's about it.

  2. I'd keep it simple: --preset slow --uhd-bd=1, set your target average bitrate and use --vbv-maxrate 64000 --vbv-bufsize 64000 for a BD-50. Those are commonly suggested starting values for UHD-BD encoding on BD-50 media. No need to override dozens of other parameters unless you have a specific reason.

The slow preset creeps along at around 2 fps on my Ryzen 5 5500, so you might want to use something faster depending on your system.

  3. It's good to know it's simpler than how it looked. I was also wondering if there's a good rule of thumb when it comes to bitrate numbers? Some of my sources are lossy. And I'd prefer to minimize as much loss as possible. So for example, if a source was say 10 Mbps, would it be wise to have the encode be 20 Mbps to hide the degradation? (I know those are low numbers. They won't be the actual numbers for the encode). I know I could use CRF. But I'm hesitant to due to CRF's tendency to spike bitrates.

  4. HEVC is more efficient than other codecs, so there's no need to increase the bitrate dramatically compared with the original.

Bitrate isn't the only factor affecting quality, either. A slower x265 preset generally produces better compression efficiency than a faster one, although encoding takes considerably longer.

For example, at the same target bitrate of 20 Mbps, a slow encode will generally deliver better quality than a fast encode, but it could take two or three times as long to complete.

It's a trade-off between encoding speed and compression efficiency. Use the slowest presets if you are willing to wait.
