Any Experiences With The Sony VRD-MC10 Recorder ???

Hello,

I am trying to transfer SVHS tape to DVD using a JVC SR_MV30 VCR with TBC. I bought the unit new when it was still available just to copy VHS tape. The DVD side stopped recognizing discs, "Disc Error" message (?). I'm using Verbatim AVO blanks as recommended by this Forum.

I bought a NIB Sony VRD-MC5 recorder. The first disc it burned came out great and played well on my DVD/Blu-ray player that performs flawless with commercial movies. The next 2 discs I burned would show the chapter screen on the TV monitor, but when I pressed play I got a "prohibited" message on the screen. Somehow going through the players menu I was able to trick it into playing finally. Removing and re-inserting the disc, I got the same failure to play message.

I can only assume the issue is with the Sony recorder. I am using Amazon, so returning stuff is easy. I started looking at the "Newer" Sony recorders, and the VRD-MC10 seemed to have better features the included RCA outputs for a monitor. My issue is the Amazon is only offering the MC10 as refurbished, I do NOT want any electronics that aren't new. I did find an MC10 "Open Box" offered that still has the film on the plastic for a VERY decent price.

Any Helpful feedback on my issues including the "Disc Error" message from the JVC ???

If it shows "Operation is currently prohibited for this disc", possible the disk is not finalized?
Can you see/play the disk on the VRD-MC5?
If you have a PC/DVD, you can try loading it with that and see what it shows?
Also you could get some DVD rewritable -rw/+rw to test/experiment without wasting disks?

Yes, I did finalize the disc, twice actually. Yes, it does play in the recorder. The first disc I burned that had no problem was some random DVD+R gathering dust on the shelf.

Try DVD+R or DVD+RW discs. Sony was in the + camp to avoid paying royalties to Pioneer who developed DVD-R, and only reluctantly began supporting DVD-R/RW later.

Here is how it finally wound up. Normally when I watch a commercially made BluRay/DVD, I just put it in the tray and push "Play" and it's all good. The ones i burn with the Sony will open to a screen, Blue, with a small thumbnail of the content and DVD at the bottom. Pushing "Play" results in the "Prohibited" message on the screen.

Somehow, I stumbled on pushing "Home" instead of "play" first, wait for the screen to change, then push "Play", it then loads/works just fine and looks/sounds GREAT ! Duh, ... these boxes of metal/plastic with all the wires are truly a mystery.
