Sorry man. I've been testing and trying all day with various things. I definitely read the suggestions (and thanks for that), however the programs just bog down as soon as I choose the capture device, and then crashes. Not much chance of changing other settings. I basically just gave up with the above mentioned programs.

Have been recording with ffmpeg the last hour or two. Like it quite a bit.

Well, it can monitor audio, but in my experience, it often can cause problems with some capture devices/drivers, resulting in high CPU usage, desync, frame drops, or no picture during preview.
It is best to leave it off during capture and rely on the level meter indicators.
This is also one of the reasons I prefer to use AmarecTV, but I really miss having those audio level indicators.

First, you just need to make sure the sound goes through. You can test it before you start capturing.
Second, as you mentioned, turn on Volume meter and you will always "see" the sound.
Third, VD has a special setting in Timing to play with in case you have an issue to play back sound during the capture.

I just had this problem again when capturing with my cheap HDMI/USB MS2109 capture device on some Windows 10/11 laptops here.
No picture when enabling audio playback in VirtualDub.
Well, there is a simple, obvious solution which seems to work for me.
Just disable audio playback in VirtualDub itself and use the Windows 'Listen to this device' option for your capture card's audio interface instead.

I used ffmpeg to record in conjunction with my Hauppauge device. I then ran a de-interlace with Vapourbox. There's some flickering which is annoying, but otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the quality.

Is there a filter in Vapour box or some other open source software that can eliminate the flickering ?

Never mind: I'm trying out deflicker filters in VirtualDub2.

Not good.

It's not deinterlaced (or deinterlaced poorly); open it in VDub, apply the Yadif Double rate TFF Interlace filter and have a look at the original on the left screen and the result on the right. The jaggies on from the left side are are removed on the right.

Mediainfo has flagged it as Progressive but it ain't.

Secondly, it looks like there is a duplicate frame/s every so often: step thru the unfiltered video in VDub and you'll spot them.

Thirdly, you've got variable frame-rate video and incorrect frame size; the DAR should be 4:3.

The conversion to AVC has botched the video.

Better for us for you to post samples of the raw capture eg HUFFYUV AVI (~15 seconds worth) . Then we can advise better. Neat Video does a reasonable job on the flickering.

Confirm no stabiliser yet? That would probably fix the flickering and the wobbly video.

This sample is recorded (converted?) in NTSC, resulting in duplicating frames?
The previous i saw,"Analog_20260903_1027.ts" is PAL?
All this PAL/NTSC switching is confusing

Thanks The_Doman. Those were exactly the messages I was getting. Although it was indeed readable, I I received a bunch of tapes from someone, and it looks pretty good on the tv. LG V281 VHS DVD Combo is my VCR device.

Were all those tapes recorded in your PAL country, or are some of them from somewhere else?

Does the AmarecTV work or not?
Using that would probably make things a bit easier and/or less confusing.

We need an "AVI" capture. I'd suggest you ditch FFMPeg initially; it's botching it for some reason, giving you a wonky file.

Use AmarecTV, as per my guide, to produce a 15 second HUFFYUV AVI file for analysis; you're currently giving us an encoded AVC file in an MKV container.

Yes, exactly.
I am afraid @Buddy captures with the "Hauppauge Capture" software as everything else (VirtualDub, AmarecTV....) made his PC crash. So he got an on-the-fly processed mpeg2 which he further "treated" with Vapourbox and eventually re-encoded with ffmpeg. Just my speculation.
(@Buddy: Try to follow Alwyn's guide, or continue using the Hauppage capture app, set it at high quality and accept what you get.)
