Hello...
Trying to create a lossless digitizing chain for VHS cassettes. The original discussion is here:
https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/420889-Problems-Digitizing-VHS-Cassettes
In this thread, the following devices were recommended as part of that chain:
• GV-USB2
• USB-Live2
• 710-USB
The 710-USB I could find nothing useful on at all. I can only find the GV-USB2 eBay, I think it was the USB-Live2 that I found on Amazon. I can find precious little else in terms of information or purchasing.
Can anyone point me to where I could get a little more info so I could at least compare the devices and then make a purchasing decision?
Thank you.

The pinnacle 710 has different versions. If you want to be sure you have the right version of that card then you have to buy it from the digitalfaq marketplace.

Same, can not find a fix that isn't "just use a different card lmao"

Buy directly tested and proven from lordsmurf (IMO, THE video capture Guru). https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/marketplace/8253-sale-ati-600-a.html .
As mentioned, manufacturers often change the hardware of their devices and what was good yesterday, may not be good today. For example, lordsmurf currently has devices from Hauppague and Tevion that are actually rebadged ATI-600.
Edit: The same advice holds true for TBCs. A prime example is the AVT-8710. The green version is good, the black version is not so great. https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/399737-Can-the-AVT-8710-be-serviced.Last edited by lingyi; 29th Aug 2026 at 16:20.

Also the late gen green AVTs don’t work well with JVCs. Then the late TBC 1000s weren’t great and some of the TBC 3000s were noisier or preset for pal even when the sticker says NTSC and vica versa. A lot regular buyers wouldn’t know when buying from eBay or a place like that.A prime example is the AVT-8710. The green version is good, the black version is not so great.

Google "GV-USB2 Reviews". Tonnes of info there.Originally Posted by Kong
The GV is on Amazon as well.
Dozens of posts on VH on the items.
I bought a 710-USB from Smurf a few years back. It was a pain to get going on Win 10, then stopped working for analogue capture. It doesn't show up in Win 11 either. I put it back in the drawer.
Oddly, it's fine for DV>USB conversions.
Smurf will say I fried it; I didn't because it started working again for a while, then went dead again.
The GV-USB2 is bulletproof; it just works. Any capture software's fine; it works well with VDub and AmarecTV and any Win 10/11 version. Instead of faffing around with old OSs, old parts, the GV just lets you get on with it.
Ignore the coming comment from Smurf about the latest version giving wiggly lines. he's based that on one tiny test only.
The Live-2 is also liked here, but needs a stabiliser eg ES-10, 15 more so than the others for stabilisation; they all actually do for iffy tapes.
Quality-wise, the 710 and the GV are the same (my test):

I never tested the Live-2 but I've used an IO-Data, it's perfectly serviceable though I prefer a Pinnacle 510/710 because it does a better job at keeping a steady audio sync.
At least compared to the IO-Data I used. -

Did you try them both in Virtualdub?I've used an IO-Data, it's perfectly serviceable though I prefer a Pinnacle 510/710 because it does a better job at keeping a steady audio sync.
-
Yes, Pinnacle does not insert frames at all, IO-Data inserts frames at the start of a capture.
No timing settings lead to the IO-Data having consistent audio sync like the Pinnacles do, not even in AmarecTV. I prefer using the Pinnacle as I never had the audio sync get worse over time. It's just I need to consistently delay the audio by 33ms due to me using an external TBC that adds in a 1 frame delay. But once I add the delay the audio is perfectly in sync throughout the whole capture. -
Watched your YT link. As best as I could tell, without putting one over the other in AE and applying a 'difference' transfer mode, they looked pretty much the same.
Lord also recommended the ES-10/15, and has one, I believe, for sale. I may take him up on that. Will do a quick price comparison though first.
Believe me, Alwyn, I looked for info on these devices. I got diddly. Although, I used DuckDuckGo, not Google. At least with the former, I don’t find ads hunting me down for something I just researched on it. However, Google’s searches do seem to produce more results.
I could pick up either one of these devices. They both run for US$70 to US$80+, not really a bank-breaker.
Thank you for taking all this time with your posts. And, I can’t wait to get this going. (But, I’m the kind of man who takes time to get things started. A) I take time to research things, so that I cover my butt and know what I’m getting into, and B) my attention’s divided across a number of different things, including personal projects, hobbies, daily necessities (grocery-shopping, exercise, devotional time), and some family nonsense I could really do without. But, God willing, I will be starting this in the near future.)
Thank you Alwyn. -

I might actually risk an eBay purchase, but I will mitigate that risk by being selective and careful.
As for the GV-USB2 or the Hauppauge Live 2 (model 610), I am seeing these on Amazon for <$100.
Barring something unexpected, I am slowly narrowing down my device chain composition, and I owe it all to you, you wonderful people!Last edited by Kong; 31st Aug 2026 at 13:33.

Amazon US listings have the USB-Live2 at $62, IO Data GV-USB at $81
-
IOData GV-USB (no HQ) 70$ in USA: https://www.amazon.com/Dubbing-Computer-Japanese-Manufacturer-GV-USB2/dp/B0BZ7Q3PKP/re...51&sr=8-2&th=1
In Europe (Hauppauge is a German Company, USB-Live 2 manufactured in China) and in Japan (IOData is a japanese company, GV-USB2 manufactured in Taiwan) the card are cheaper! -
Hauppauge USB-Live2 are also manufactured in Malaysia. I just wonder where they get the CX23102 from, these days ....
Hauppauge a German Company? Really? That's new to me.

GVUSB2 uses Techwell 9910 made in Taiwan
Hauppage uses the Conexant Polaris made in Indonesia
Diamond VC500 uses the Conexant Polaris made in China
The best one from this list is the GV-USB2 but only buy it from Amazon, do not buy it from a third party seller.
If you are looking to capture VHS you will need a Panasonic dvd recorder in the chain, or you will get dropped frames and a jumping unstable picture.
It would be useful to know will you be using windows 10 or windows 11?
For any of these capture cards to work and for the drivers to load you have to turn off core isolation settings. -
