Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a frustrating situation I've been dealing with recently and also ask about your experiences maintaining MiniDV and HDV digitization setups over the years.
At the moment, I own nine MiniDV/HDV camcorders. Out of all of them, only two are currently being recognized properly through FireWire by my computer and ScenalyzerLive:
* Samsung SC-D903 (NTSC)
* Samsung SC-D371 (NTSC)
Both cameras connect and work correctly over FireWire, but unfortunately neither one can play PAL tapes.
I also have a Sony DCR-HC20 NTSC that plays both PAL and NTSC tapes without any problem, but for some reason I haven't been able to get it recognized through FireWire.
Some of the other cameras may simply have faults. These are old machines with mechanical parts, and eventually things fail. However, the situation that surprised me the most involves two Sony HDR-HC9 HDV camcorders.
I have two identical HDR-HC9 units, and I used both of them extensively while always taking proper care of them. They were incredibly useful: they could play PAL and NTSC material, handle both DV and HDV, and they were also the only cameras that ScenalyzerLive didn't identify as just a generic DV device. The software actually recognized the exact camera model.
They were also my main solution for capturing HDV.
Now, both HDR-HC9 cameras have exactly the same problem: they play tapes perfectly, including both PAL and NTSC, but I can't get any FireWire connection from either of them.
One alternative I'm considering is using the component output and capturing it with my Blackmagic Intensity Pro cards using a lossless codec. As an alternative to FireWire, is this a viable option, or would the quality loss from the D/A and A/D conversion be significant enough to avoid it?
That's what made me want to start this discussion.
For those of you who have been digitizing MiniDV and HDV for many years: how are you keeping your setups alive?
I understand that these devices have a limited lifespan. There are tape transports, motors, heads, connectors, capacitors, and other components that can eventually fail. But for anyone doing this professionally or semi-professionally, it seems almost inevitable that we have to keep buying used cameras and decks whenever we find a good deal, knowing that at some point we'll probably need them.
That's basically what I've been doing. Whenever I see a suitable second-hand camera at a reasonable price, I consider buying it as a backup or future replacement.
The frustrating part is that right now, out of nine cameras, I effectively have only two that are working for FireWire capture—and neither one can handle PAL.
Since I live in Argentina, that is a real limitation. A lot of MiniDV material here was recorded using NTSC camcorders, especially imported consumer models, but PAL tapes still appear regularly enough that I need to be able to handle both standards.
I've been digitizing DV material for several years. At one point, I completed a fairly large archival project involving roughly 300 MiniDV tapes from a library collection. For that project, I used consumer camcorders, including a Sony DCR-HC52 that turned out to be surprisingly reliable and performed very well.
So I'm not new to DV capture, but this recent experience has made me realize how fragile my equipment situation actually is. I don't really have a guaranteed playback chain anymore.
I'm also curious about what everyone thinks about FireWire itself in 2026, heading into 2027.
Years ago, I used regular PCI FireWire cards. As I upgraded my computers, I moved to PCI Express FireWire cards, and overall I haven't had major problems with the cards themselves.
But FireWire can definitely be temperamental. Those of you using ScenalyzerLive probably know the routine: sometimes you have to turn the camera off, reconnect the cable, restart the software, power the camera back on, disconnect everything, and try again until the device finally appears.
Once it works, it's fantastic. A direct digital transfer from DV or HDV is exactly what we want.
So I'd really like to hear about your current experiences digitizing MiniDV and HDV. What equipment are you using these days? How are you dealing with aging cameras, failing FireWire ports, and the increasing difficulty of finding reliable playback hardware?
I'd especially be interested in hearing how people who still work with these formats are keeping their setups running and what long-term strategies you've developed.

I have a DCR-HC85E PAL miniDV camcorder that I bought used. It has a bad touch screen and it cannot be used for recording but the playback quality is still decent. I have captured all the miniDV tapes into DV AVI format that I burnt into 10 blu-ray discs. All my Video8 tapes had already been converted to miniDV tapes using pass-through. All these are still stored in my dry box. My area is humid all year round. The rest of my video is in H.264 AVCHD format. Once it reaches 50GB, I will burn into another blu-ray disc. The only trouble with blu-ray disc is that it's a dying format. The bly-ray burner is hard to come by now.
I my opinion, miniDV is as dead as dodo bird. There is no new miniDV camcorder available in the market. Once it dies, all the videos achieved in the miniDV cannot be read back. Dead!. It's best to transfer to digital media that can be easily read. One promising method to store in USB A/C SSD thumb drive that comes in 1TB or 2TB. Not cheap and to be reliable need 2 copies. -
I'm still having success with a VIA-based PCIe Firewire card and Scenalyzer.
If all else fails, doing an analogue capture of a DV tape isn't all that bad, in fact I challenge anyone to come up with show-stopping differences. A comparison example on my YT channel (not frame accurate but you'll get the idea):

In a way, an analogue capture has the advantage of being able to control the levels during capture; with a DV transfer, you can only adjust in POST.
I can't currently do HDV as my HV20 is cactus (when it was working, no issues with HDVSplit). -
Newer video devices do not need firewire. Most up to date video devices can capture 1440x1080p or 1920x1080p or 4K video format on SD card. Instead of capturing via firewire which need to sit through the entire video, SD card video transfer to PC is much faster.

I still have miniDV working cameras, (Sony Sony DCR-PC6E, Sony DCR-PC9E, Canon XL1, Canon HV20 among others).

ScenalyzerLive software to transfer, with AVPS DV Analyzer and DVRescue to analyze/fix. -

Reading about your experiences, I see that, in general, we all have very similar setups. So, for now, my plan is to keep looking for used cameras that can play back DV until it becomes a Herculean task and only a lucky few can do it.
What also makes me think this is that Mini-DV via FireWire—since it requires a PCI FireWire or PCI-E FireWire card + dedicated software + a camera in good working order (including its FireWire output, PAL or NTSC standard, and, of course, the mechanical components)—ends up being a more complex process than transferring a VHS or Video8 tape. It’s a more expensive process, and even more so when it comes to HDV, since you have to use higher-end equipment.
On the other hand, I watched Alwyn’s comparison video of analog capture versus FireWire capture. And it really looks great. I’m going to keep that as an alternative for making use of cameras that don’t have working FireWire but do have composite output. -

The used miniDV market is not going to last forever. Then again, nothing last forever. Try google replacement parts for VCR or miniDV tape mechanisms or read heads. But there are still blu-ray mechanism and laser read head available on Aliexpress.
The complexity of VCR and miniDV tape mechanism far exceed that of an optical disc. Even google AI didn't get it right. Why bother keeping in a format that is impossible to maintain in the future ? You don't want to transfer DV/HDV via analog outputs, The quality loss is worth getting another camcorder that has a working firewire port. It may not show in low end consumer camcorders with low CCD/CMOS resolution and blown levels, but for decent recordings there will be a difference.

Not so. You need a working camcorder in both scenarios and capture software in both cases is free. Whack a Firewire card into your PC and that's it for DV.What also makes me think this is that Mini-DV via FireWire—since it requires a PCI FireWire or PCI-E FireWire card + dedicated software + a camera in good working order (including its FireWire output, PAL or NTSC standard, and, of course, the mechanical components)—ends up being a more complex process than transferring a VHS or Video8 tape. It’s a more expensive process, and even more so when it comes to HDV, since you have to use higher-end equipment.
Going the analogue route, you need a good digitiser, possibly a stabiliser, with attendant possible sync issues.
Post-capture processing is essentially the same for both, with deinterlacing, denoising, cropping/resizing with analogue captures allegedly being better to restore because there's more information in the capture.
Practically-speaking though, if it's DV or HDV, you should use the Firewire route as it's a direct-transfer of data as opposed to a capture. -

True, but the topic is only about DV/HDV and how to digitise it. Nothing to do with VHS.

VHS isn't miniDV. The information transmitted by the D/A converter will be in higher luma and chrome resolution than VHS.
But there will be no more information anyway. This will be the same compressed DV data, only transmitted as decompressed. Plus quality losses, including those resulting from the characteristics of the analog signal.Last edited by rgr; 26th Aug 2026 at 04:44.

The comment was about miniDV content versus an analog vhs content, not the miniDV signal converted to analog and captured as such.

I was pointing out that the DV route isn't a more complex process than an analogue capture and yes, I was comparing a DV transfer with an analogue capture of DV to make my point.
