Been away from video capture for quite a while but have a bunch of VHS/VHS-C tapes and camcorder tapes including Video 8 / HI8 and Mini DV tapes to archive, I noticed that Firewire has completely disappeared from Windows laptops and USB-C to Firewire is not even a thing despite ebay selling the cables for some strange reason?
I have picked up some vintage camcorder gear for playback including a Sony DCR TR7000E Digital 8 camcorder for the analog Video 8 and HI8 tapes, and also a Sony DCR PC1000E for the MiniDV tapes, I have a JVC S6955 S VHS VCR as well for the Svideo output which I read is the best way to capture standard VHS tapes, I was also given a Sony RDR-HXD970 which I believe has Timebase correction on its analog inputs so I think I have enough gear to archive the tapes that I have?
I am not a Mac guy but I realised that these Macbook Pros up to the Mid 2012 releases do native DV firewire capture and were built so well that many of them survive today and still work reliably, my question is what is the consensus with you expert videographers using Macs on the best Mac OS to use to archive DV footage? AI is telling me High Sierra but then I see Catalina mentioned with Catalina being the last official release for the A1278, is it worth installing Sequoia? I read that some of the Mac OS versions are better for firewire than others, also what is the best Mac software to do all of this archiving with?
Thanks for reading.

Yes, the macOS version significantly matters for capturing MiniDV, primarily due to the discontinuation of FireWire support in recent updates. While MiniDV transfer relies on FireWire (IEEE 1394) for direct digital capture, modern MacBooks lack native FireWire ports, requiring a chain of Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapters.
Key OS Considerations:
macOS Sonoma (14.1+) and Later: Apple removed legacy FireWire support in these versions. Users must temporarily enable legacy device support via Recovery Mode to allow older camcorders to connect, and even then, support is unstable or unavailable in newer beta versions like macOS Tahoe (26).
Older macOS Versions (Mojave, Catalina, etc.): These versions retain better native compatibility with FireWire adapters and include iMovie or QuickTime Player that can directly recognize and capture from connected MiniDV camcorders without complex workarounds.
Legacy Macs (Tiger/Leopard): Using an older Mac with a native FireWire port and iMovie '06 or QuickTime 7 is often the most reliable method, as it avoids the need for expensive and finicky Thunderbolt adapter chains. -
Thanks for the reply, I am just feeling my way through this MacOS thing, its certainly different to windows which I am more used to, it would be nice to just be able to install the latest version and then have it work correctly with Firewire, I was only the other day watching Steve Jobs proclaim the advantages of having Firewire on the new Mac computers that he had developed and was promoting, maybe if he had lived on so might have native Firewire?
AI is recommending High Sierra saying it has native firewire support with tape transport controls, together with much better compatibility with older Capture software, I have not purchased a 9pin to 4pin firewire cable yet so just pondering over which MacOS is going to be the best to work with? -
You are not a MAC guy but looking for a MAC/DV solution?
Can't capture DV no matter what I try.

Yes I have never used a Mac to capture video before, I was searching for a cable for my Windows laptop and I thought Firewire to USB had become an actual thing looking at the Cables available on ebay, but then discovered that they do not work, so started looking for other options and stumbled upon the 2012 MacBook Pro which pricked my interest, I had looked for an older PC Laptop with Firewire but these Macbooks interested me more.

I've done DV captures on the newer M series Macs without any issues using USB-C (Thunderbolt3) to Thunderbolt2 and then Thunderbolt2 to Firewire 800 without any issues. Haven't tried it in the current OS26 though.
There are even devices that can capture DV that don't involve using a computer at all. Datavideo makes a few boxes that will do it (stores in native DV on a removable hard drive), or you can really just use any windows desktop computer and a firewire card. Many XP era laptops also had firewire ports that work too.
USB to firewire is an actual thing on windows - The Pinnacle Moviebox series devices will do it, but I can't speak to which OS's are supported. -
I saw the cost of those adapters needed to get the DV footage into newer Macbooks and just looked the other way and to the older Macbooks that come with native Firewire that just need a cheap 9 pin to 4 pin cable, I will not be using the Macbook for anything but capturing DV footage it will be used like a dedicated capture device.
There is no direct Firewire to USB without using some sort of extra hardware from what I can gather? a 2012 Macbook with Native Firewire just looks like the way to go, I will have to buy an 4 pin to 9 pin firewire lead and test out the operating systems to see which one is the best for DV capture? -
Older PCs and Macs with a built-in FireWire port are cheap or even free. A DV capture system can run 100% offline, just copy the video files to USB drives when you're done. And it's not at all demanding of CPU power. My 800 MHz iBook G3 from 2003 does it flawlessly.
