vhs-decode's RF filters have been significantly improved since last year. I've attached a new decode of the same RF file from my previous post. The measured black SNR is 1dB lower, but I personally don't mind extra noise when the overall image is improved.

I'm currently seeing if i can use VHS-Decode with my Terratec Cinergy HT PCI card that’s PCI and have a CX23883-39 chip on it mostly for single channels formats such as Video 8, Hi8 and Laserdisc, for multi channels formats formats such as Betamax, VHS and Super VHS i will still be capturing them the conventional way with a DVD recorder with TBC with a 12-bit ADC on it from a Sony RDR-HX recorder until the MISRC iteration becomes better in the future as an alternative to the CX cards and the clock gen mod.
Also, how does this works without using that ADA amp in the chain and a Stock unmodified good CX card that could have good Crystal oscillators already? The captures would look worse than a good conventional capture?
I can’t get the ADA amp and if i do it i will be using my CX card stock unmodified just to see if it worth it and i get sharper and better results with less color bleed than a conventional capture using my Digital 8 camera via FireWire.

Edit: Never mind, the ADA Amp in the chain is super important for vhs-decode to make more sense, however seems like the 40MHz crystal mod is not that necessary because with 28.6msps is well enough for analog formats using that ADA amp in the chain.
Sadly there are not a SINGLE video in youtube doing a well explanation, showing the setup and how it is properly done. I have always wondered what best port is used to connect the BNC cable carrying the audio and video from single channel formats to the CX card, composite to BNC? I'm not sure what video explanation is really needed? The RF amp just goes between your RF source and the CX card and requires around 12-16VDC power, though you can make it work on other voltages too. The wiki explains that you do have to choose input and output gain resistors for the ADA amp though, but seems like the input side doesn't matter quite as much with some saying to just use 40K-50K resistors on the input side. Output side there'd be one 560ohm resistor and another that gets your ending voltage up to around 1.5V peak to peak on an oscilloscope, or you could use the capture interface to make sure the gain resistor isn't set too high.
The more confusing part of using a CX card is it being highly recommended to do a "clockgen" mod to the card which is yet another custom board to acquire that I believe is often out of stock, though you could make some yourself. I've dabbled with the Cx card, but I didn't do the clockgen mod with mine as I don't really plan to do any super long captures with it in the testing stage.
BNC connectors are generally better for sensitive signals, but keeping the card un-modded and just using the regular composite or S-Video jack is plenty fine for dabbling with, you can always upgrade later.
If you're looking to just get better results than DV, you could just do a traditional capture from the S-Video output of the D8 camera as well. Getting at the RF tap point on consumer camcorders can be kind of frustrating/tedious if you aren't used to working with tiny wires unless you're using a custom breakout cable. -
I think i will wait some more years until the whole vhs-decode project, hardware and software wise has progressed a lot and made it easier and with a proper GUI and being able to get everything in a single unit which is what the MISRC iteration aims to do apparently and being able to get them from something like Aliexpress, the pieces for the test jig points of the Sony cameras is easy, all the pieces are in Aliexpress in stock and is very easy to me, the flex cable, the board and the BNC adapter that connects the jig point of the camera to a BNC male or female.
So... For now i'm searching a proper DVD recorder that have very good (better than standalone TBC boxes like the Datavideos) TBC/Sync capabilities, a good 10-12 bit at +100MHz ADC and an HDMI port that can output interlaced YUV 4:2:2 video (HDCP, so a splitter, i don't know if an HDMI to DVI and back to HDMI would work too, wich in that case i just connect the digital audio output to my motherboard) and a Blackmagic or StarTech HDMI/SDI capture card that can output proper interlaced YUV 4:2:2 video over HDMI/SDI for a very good HDMI/SDI 4:2:2 FFV1 conventional capture and then when some years passes i will come back to the vhs-decode project and see how things changed and became better and how much they advanced to finally kill the world of the conventional captures, but that didn't happen yet, i'm waiting when that can finally happen, but until then...

It's really weird how people are still 1-2 years out of date on this forum idk if its funny or sad at this point...
So the capture workflows all have a unified GUI now under MISRC GUI, including the CX Cards.

VHS-Decode main got "Decode Launcher" as its main binary GUI when opened, both it and hifi-decode gui have auto-loading features to detect system and format and sample rate even if initial captured files are named properly.

Relax guy, yes okay there are decent GUIs now, very nice i hope this get's better with the time, i will have that in mind but for now i prefer to wait some more time until i can get everything in one setup which that is what the MISRC aims to do and hoping to have that at a decent price too.
I already knew there were some decent GUIs because i spent some of these recent days exploring the wiki at GitHub which is an incredible bible right now and makes sense that many people can get confused with it, but i was exploring and reading it and yes, cool, there are some recent and decent GUIs being made right now, what i was referring in my original comment is hoping for the project to improve more and more in the coming years with better GUIs and better hardware for example what the MISRC aims to do unlike with other things like the CX cards, their mods and the clockgen mod. -
Not being hostile or anything, just we have hit "scope point" for GUIs for production use all the core stuff is here, for capture decode and post decode.
Working end to end and there is no more "scope" blackhole's to it for the decode and export side for tape users, for the actual capturing stuff to files that's over too, yeah there is more real-time decoding plugins to be tinkered with but for just getting tapes transferred that is done and over now.
After the real-time rust branch came out the only "it's slow" complaint was flat murdered for basic turn key users.
When the ADA4857 amp was introduced FM RF Archival became an level game irrespective of VCR or capture hardware, 3 years ago now we entered into "1-5%'s" world of margins with a proper setup.
The MISRC V2.5 is just a USB 3.0 long term replacement for the CX Cards + Clockgen Mod which is not going anywhere until the cards on the market do... so until that day it will be the most reliable and cost effective gold standard for users at the 250USD or less total adoption point, MISRC GUI today allows those users to migrate in a single day to MISRC or other hardware when that cheap hardware is gone forever.Bringing Affordable FM RF Video Tape Archival to the World!

All the while the main barrier that is the soldering requirement and complexity of following the github will never improve so it'll forever stay a niche ontop of a dying hobby. Shoving it down people's throats like your a religious man ain't exactly doing you favors btw.
Man it's like everything is improving except for the aspect that has the highest chance of causing people to quit and pursue a different path. Oh wait there are multiple cases of people getting frustrated over different aspects of this project, it's complexity and hostile community leader.
Alas, this is the timeline we live in. Can't even have the option of "paying somebody else to do all the hard work"

I'm curious to know exactly in a side by side comparison how much of a difference between a RF capture and a Y-C capture with TBC capturing into a SDI rig, Because I've already invested in the later. We've seen composite to RF comparisons and the difference is obvious in certain aspects of picture quality where RF excels.

Can't fully help as I don't have an SDI setup, though I think for the McDonalds tape comparison we did the differences weren't extremely obvious, they seemed rather minor to me, like different color values. Something that could easily be tweaked in editing.
So I suspect it'd probably be the same as decode vs a prosumer USB setup. Ranges from either way worse to not at all better.
I really just view decode as cool and neat, but rather impractical for most people. It should stop be advertised as the best and accessible method available as it most certainly is not. -
Not to mention the ringing and hallows artifacts that are not completely eliminated from an RF capture, So capture now and process later when it improves is not really a true statement as it does not guarantee the absence of those artifacts from the original RF capture since we don't know if they are part of RF capture or not because there is no way of visualizing the RF capture without decoding it first, So no one wants to recapture the tapes after finding out the hardware was flawed few years down the road.

That and if an old RF capture has dropouts caused by dirty VCR heads. Can't fix that with a fresh decode of the old raw files now can you. You get tapes with ringing baked in, and decode adds in it's own ringing/halo artifacts. It's like making a VHS to VHS copy, just making the problems worse and worse until they can't be easily corrected.
Honestly I've rarely had to deal with dropouts caused by a dirty VCR and instead dropouts caused by the tape, ones that happen on the same frame no matter the VCR.
Or what if you decode an old capture done with a non suggested setup? Oops the best way to do it is to redo it all over again with a different workflow! -
I guess for the RF capture you actually avoid all of the internal image processing and decoding of the VCR for a complete RAW capture, but what i'm curious to see is how much of a difference there is between this to a "conventional" capture by using the Super VHS Sony or Panasonic VCR in EDIT mode and turning off all of their noise reduction filters, then turning off all of the NR filters for those who uses DVD recorders and their HDMI output, which is what i was considering to do, replace my DMR-ES10EG to a Sony or Pioneer DVD recorder with good TBC/Sync capabilities and use with a good splitter recommended by Skiller in Aliexpress their HDMI outputs in YUV 4:4:4, then a digital capture card to do the downconvert to 4:2:2, but some people here has been telling some color issues or "green tint" with the HDMI outputs of these DVD recorders, but i don't know if is because of color changes with some splitters or because they forgot the color system was set in RGB in those machines because (except the Panasonics) they don't allow a YUV 4:2:2 output with 480i/576i via HDMI.
Also, another interesting point of the vhs-decode project is the use of any regular VHS HiFi 4-6 heads VCR for Super VHS too, so this project have it's use and advantages.Last edited by Joscraft_05; 10th Aug 2026 at 06:24.

Yes actually i'm deciding if i get a Sony/Pioneer DVD recorder with HDMI outputs and a digital proper capture card for HDMI for direct digital captures and turning off all of the Noise Reduction filters of it and the VCR/Camera until i decide to get a vhs-decode setup or i keep my DMR-ES10EG and my TRV730E for my PAL DV 4:2:0 captures, but my DMR-ES10EG needs to be recapped so i'm seeing what is worth it more now that i need to spend money and time in my DMR-ES10EG.
I have heard about the color issues and "green tint" of the HDMI outputs of some Pioneer and Sony's but i'm not sure about this, for a direct HDMI capture without a DVI adapter the recorders allow me for a YUV 4:4:4 output but i don't know if the splitters for the HDCP issue mess with the color system too, i have a splitter in Aliexpress recommended by Skiller that does transport the raw 480/576i signals very well and output them to the capture card, but the issue of the color system remains a mystery to me.

We already know that, The question is whether the VCR processing of the RF signal built by the 80/90's engineers is still better than modern CPU software processing in the vhsdecode? A lot of people may say well it's obvious modern software is better, but I still believe that those engineers back then knew a lot more about RF processing and their problems, They almost perfected the damn thing with no user intervention, All stock except few options for image enhancement that one can do without.

It's better than a crappy low end VCR hooked up to an Elgato, but so is a prosumer setup. Hell even DV is better than Elgato + it's built in software.
Oh cool decode can preserve teletext, okay but for those not in the UK who honestly cares? Teletext barely existed in the US, the two biggest kinds being CBS and NBC were discontinued in 1988 and 1985 respectively. I've been using an otherwise crappy Pinnacle Dazzle DVC100 to preserve close caption data as footage captured with that card is positioned low enough so that information is visible in the picture frame.
Here's some image comparisons I have on hand, same tape and same VCR being a refurbished JVC SR-MV45U that I got modded with the amplifier. Decode capture was done by Aramkolt (who modded it) as I currently do not have the ability to make my own decode captures. The mod sits unused for now. -

Well, the same ringing/hallows again... I wonder if this can be improved in the future to get them less noticeable and distracting, sorry but they are just too distracting. This tells me that with the fm rf captures although you can get ALL the details and everything stored in the tape, these can get amplified to a certain extent, and i think that's the biggest issue right now with the fm rf captures with vhs-decode.
The difference in the colour is obvious though, i wonder how the firewire captures from that JVC VS30U compares to the ADC chips from the Sony and Panasonic DV camcorders for DV25 captures. I really like the colors with the vhs-decode capture to be honest and i see more "details" i think, but the ringing/hallows artifacts are just too distracting sadly although i see this can vary, the second image comparison with Snoopy in the desert is somewhat less affected by this and is more enjoyable to my eyes.
I would love if someone does a comparison and makes a vhs-decode fm rf capture of Video 8 and Hi8 home videos played back in the Hi8 XR camcorders or Digital 8 ones via their test jig points, surprisingly i still haven't seen nobody doing this and uploading the videos to youtube for home videos in Video 8/Hi8 or vhs-c/super vhs-c, the channel of Harry did upload one video with VHS-C/Super VHS-C videos from a low end consumer camera from the early 2000's though, there's another channel called "LukaCafuka" that started doing vhs-decode of the Umatic format too.Last edited by Joscraft_05; 10th Aug 2026 at 17:15.

We have real world demo archives published with full data for anyone to download and run though a decode binary with 30 seconds of effort if people want to see what an "average tape" looks like.
(kinda why r/vhsdecode was started and has a self sustaining feedback loop of newbies to steady users new snips posted all the time of solid to fun edge cases)
Video8 was 1:1 with S-Video results about a year ago, Hi8 has the odd edge case tapes but again at or superseding S-Video in 98% of cases for current decoding, just did a batch of 1990s tapes decode has more range to work with that was about it of note, PAL Transform 2D and 3D work on color-under sources now so that does give some slightly cleaner results on chroma then my ADV7842 reference setup (I have the eval board but the results are identical to the BMD SDI boxes), Hi8 RCTC is still an DV25 over digital8 to recover and export as ancillary metadata.
(HiFi-Decode for 8mm and for VHS hit 1:1 if not better as long as tracking has not gone out of the window, about 6 months ago also runs 5x real-time)

There is a lot of lacking of separation between FM RF Archival which is done and over and the software decoding which now LLMs can play in the frequency adjustment game has been rapidly anyone can adjust the filters for there decodes hell a whole tool "filter tune" was implemented with a GUI for this very reason anyone can fine tune a decode profile for a batch of tapes or an interval tape.
And there has been pre-made kits sold for little over 2 years now for hardware side too, I know because I run the store and I personally or the community have supported everyone that has made an order go from willing novice to saving some history... Hell it has mostly self-funded the MISRC V2.5's development and allowed for resources to go into full ARM64 support testing, like no one else but me gave a shit about tangibly maintaining Apple X86 and ARM support despite the value for real-world institutions.Bringing Affordable FM RF Video Tape Archival to the World!

I think by detail we mean noise, alas some tapes are just noisy than others.. it confuses our brain into thinking that extra noise is more detail when in reality it is not.
Anyway color is subjective, varies between setup and even VCR. Honestly it ain't hard to adjust the colors of the prosumer capture to match the decode capture as I originally did here.

Never liked how Hi-Fi audio sounds with decode tbh, sounds way too loud and bass boost-y. feels like I'd get equal results by taking a traditional hi-fi audio capture and raising the bass + tremble in Audacity or some other audio editor.
One might be able to fool the unsuspecting person who thinks VHS as a whole is compressed mush, but one can't fool people like us who know what a proper digitized + properly made VHS tape (as in not a copy of a copy sort of deal) looks like before this new method came alongLast edited by The 14th Doctor; 10th Aug 2026 at 18:59.

It's the same deal as the comparisons on the Github page, unfair and biased that makes it look like it was done to push an agenda. Anyway from other comparisons he uses a Panasonic DVD recorder hooked up to a Blackmagic device.
Though meh, you've been negatively talked about as a person because you dare speak negatively over the project.
My comparisons are the most fair and unbiased imo, they properly show that decode is not better than a prosumer setup, ranging from worse to almost on par. But not better, maybe better in terms of features but not quality. What you think is more detail is actually more noise disguising itself as more detail.
Recently got in contact with r/datahorder moderator Nicholas Serra, he tried decode out on some HI8 tapes and he wasn't impressed as the quality was not better than what he can achieve with his prosumer setup, telling me has no desire to switch to using decode for his collection due to it costing him more time to get inferior results.Last edited by The 14th Doctor; 11th Aug 2026 at 07:04.

I never used vhs-decode, I am not against it in principle, and I had/have great expectations. But so far, the "classic" recommened workflow is equivalent or better. -

That's what it is, we don't hate that the method exists, we just dislike the false claims going around and are trying to debunk them. It's only better than a prosumer setup if the gear is broken, like the Panasonic example on the Github.
I'm only glad decode as a whole exists for it's original purpose, to archive LaserDiscs which it is 100% the best method to capture LDs, nobody, not even "decode's strongest haters" are denying that. -
Well, we have false claims going around for the "classic" workflows as well about VCRs, TBCs, Capture Cards, Codecs, capture Color Space, post-processing and so on.

I see, i think i also saw way less color bleed and more "advantages" from those who have the cheaper "high end" setup of a good DVD Recorder with HDMI output, a recommended HDMI splitter and a digital HDMI/SDI capture card with all of the NR filters in the VCR/Camera and the DVD Recorder turned off, obviously with vhs-decode you can get a better performance for the software based TBC in worse or pretty damaged tapes and the use of more common regular VHS HiFi VCRs.
Although other people here as i said before noted some issues of the green tints and issues with the color system between the DVD Recorder and the HDMI splitter... Sadly is true that getting nowadays standalone TBC boxes is very very hard and expensive, hell even a lot of people in my country sells their DVD Recorders for a price, for normal machines that doesn't have the capabilities and others that have the TBC/Sync capabilities.
I like the DMR-ES10 a lot when you turn off it's Noise Reduction filters for a most "raw" output and i never noticed any "posterization" issues and other quality issues that LordSmurf said these DVD Recorders had, but what i don't like is the inevitable lossy process of the A>D>A>D conversion when using a DVD Recorder that doesn't have an HDMI output.
About the Laserdisc format, yeah that's a Composite format by nature so in this case you get an INCREDIBLE advantage of doing FM RF captures with LD-Decode for this format. -
This is rather theoretical but not a real/practical issue IMO, unless your analog levels coming from your VCR are totally off the kilter (which would be flawed anyway). The ES15 for example has 12bit ADCs. Compare this with the true resolution (aka its SNR equivalent, noise floor) of analog VHS/S-VHS sources. Same for the "posterization" or "pixellation" tales. Nothing to worry about in practice. Just my opinion.

My DMR-ES10 have it's video inputs failing now due to the bad capacitors though so i'm seeing if is worth it more to repair it or try to search another Panasonic model with 12bit ADCs from 2006 or 2007 with an HDMI output and a recommended HDMI splitter by Skiller to upgrade my workflow to a lossless HDMI capture, or other Sony RDR-HX/HXD models (these only allow YUV 4:4:4 in the HDMI output) too since these are way more common second hand in my area, if i do this i need to be careful by the color system issues or "green tint" that i saw here happening to other people with Pioneer and Sony DVD Recorders but i wonder if it was because they had the color set to RGB or the HDMI splitter was messing with the color system, to be honest i was looking into upgrading my workflow from DV25 to an HDMI lossless capture and was searching in this forum what good DVD Recorders allowed this (with an splitter), but then i found the color system issues and "green tint" and now i'm not sure.
I'm still looking into the vhs-decode stuff but that's for the future maybe 1-2 years or a bit more, so before i decide to jump into this i'm deciding if i save money and still do DV25 captures and repair the capacitors in my DMR-ES10 or jump to HDMI lossless captures. With all things said, my PAL DV25 captures using my Digital 8 DCR-TRV730E already looks pretty good to me and cool for 25Mb/s 4:2:0, but not for archiving purposes or wanting better chroma and a lossless process i understand.
I'm actually curious if you can do analog captures with the DVCPRO50 codec of the Panasonics too, since this is 50 Mb/s 4:2:2. -
I don't mean to derail the topic, but there are alternatives to computer and HDMI splitters, Get a HDMI/SDI recorder, You will be surprised how stable the system is, not to mention how compact is and you will be able to free up your computer for other tasks such processing and encoding, I'm computer-less for capturing for almost two years now, never going back.
DVCPRO recorders tend to be expensive and complex to repair, Some of them can output lossless SDI, the same goes for Betacam recorders or any pro format for that matters, The benefits of SDI over HDMI is that it is standard compliant, The levels are correct, The color space is exact and the audio is embedded too just like HDMI despite using two wires only.
