Hi everyone,
I've started ripping my Blu-ray collection with MakeMKV and I'm trying to figure out how to use Handbrake to shrink the file size. I’ve attached two 15-second videos: one is the original Blu-ray rip and the other is the compressed version I’m aiming for. Just to give you an idea of the sizes, the full Blu-ray movie is 23.1GB, and the compressed file is 6.33GB.
So far, I've been experimenting with the Filters tab, Encoder Tunes, and Advanced Options in Handbrake, but my conversions always turn out worse than the example file. By "worse," I mean there's a lot of grain and noise in my Blu-ray rips, while the example looks much cleaner and sharp.
I'm relatively new to video encoding and eager to learn more. I could go into more detail about the specific settings I’ve tried, but none of them seem to give me the quality I want, so I’d prefer to ask for advice. A lot of the terminology is still new to me, so I’m not entirely sure how to describe the issue I'm encountering.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sure, the images are the general settings I normally use.
I also attached one video "Cut1" modifying only the advanced options of the general settings. I put "limit-sao; bframes=6; psy-rd=1.5; aq-mode=3" -

Here it is. At 25 FPS and without advanced options. It is still not like the "Example" file.

Thank you for your help,ProWo, but I’m still trying to make it look good. I’ve attached three images for comparison to better illustrate the point I’m trying to make.
The images labeled 0001 are from Cut3_CTFPS_no_adv_options, while 0002 is from the example file. In the first set, as you can see, there are several grainy or noise-compression artifacts (possibly?) that appear in the eyes of the creature.
In the second set (sorry for not being able to save the exact same frame), I’d like you to focus on the red-haired girl—particularly her shadows and hair. Finally, in the third set of images, if we look at the blonde girl in the background, you can see that she also appears very noisy.
Of course, these are single frames and the footage should be considered in motion, but the effect is the same and becomes easy to detect over time. My goal is to make the result look as good as the example file. -
I think these subtle (and minor) differences are caused by the lower bitrate.
Example.mkv has a higher bitrate than Cut3_CTFPS_no_adv_options.mkv.
Reduce the Quality value from 17 to 12 (lower value = better quality) and then compare the results.
BTW
Example.mkv is encoded with x264 and Cut3_CTFPS_no_adv_options.mkv with hevc (x265).Last edited by ProWo; 5th Jan 2026 at 09:04.
