Hi everyone,
I've started ripping my Blu-ray collection with MakeMKV and I'm trying to figure out how to use Handbrake to shrink the file size.
So far, I've been experimenting with the Filters tab, Encoder Tunes, and Advanced Options in Handbrake, but my conversions always turn out worse than the example file. By "worse," I mean there's a lot of grain and noise in my Blu-ray rips, while the example looks much cleaner and sharp.
I'm relatively new to video encoding and eager to learn more. I could go into more detail about the specific settings I’ve tried, but none of them seem to give me the quality I want, so I’d prefer to ask for advice. A lot of the terminology is still new to me, so I’m not entirely sure how to describe the issue I'm encountering.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sure, the images are the general settings I normally use.
The advanced options of the general settings. I put "limit-sao; bframes=6; psy-rd=1.5; aq-mode=3"Last edited by ForgerL; 25th Jan 2026 at 04:58.

I think these subtle (and minor) differences are caused by the lower bitrate.
Example.mkv has a higher bitrate than Cut3_CTFPS_no_adv_options.mkv.
Reduce the Quality value from 17 to 12 (lower value = better quality) and then compare the results.
BTW
Example.mkv is encoded with x264 and Cut3_CTFPS_no_adv_options.mkv with hevc (x265).Last edited by ProWo; 5th Jan 2026 at 09:04.

I used RF14 because with RF12 the file size ended up being slightly larger than the original. Even though the issues are less noticeable now, they’re still present. Currently, the file takes up more space and looks less visually appealing to me. Video encoding is definitely challenging! I also tried H.264 as a comparison, but I found it to be slightly inferior to H.265.
